PC help question guys & gals.

The ribbon cable that runs from the motherboard to the drives has two connections. Master and secondary (slave) I have two drives. One has XP while the other has ME. I want to set up the XP as the master and the ME as the slave. There are some files that need to be copied over before I can blank the ME os off. Now I should set the jumper for the XP drive to Master and then set the ME drive to slave. Then I should hook the XP drive on top for the end connection and the ME under it.
From the motherboard the ribbon cable first connects to the ME drive then to the XP drive.
Is that the right order for the correct OS to boot? I want to boot the XP drive first of course.

I don't think it matters which connector you uses for which drive, just which one is set as master. Yes, the XP drive should be set as master and the ME drive as slave.

If you have a setup where you can boot the ME drive, you could just burn a CD or use a USB thumb drive to backup the files.
So long as you use the jumpers to set "master" and "slave", it does not matter which order you connect them in.

If you set the jumpers to "cable select", then the order does matter. On recent cables, the "master" connector is at the end, and the "slave" connector is in the middle. But don't worry about this unless you are specifically using "cable select" (I never do).
Thanks you two for your quick replies.

Just wanted to double check before I go screw things up.

I'm more use to how the Mac OS works than Windows so this is good step for me to remember.

Everything worked out fine.

Just needed to add XP to the drive that will be the main and now both XP and ME are there together. As soon as all the needed info is backed up and or copied over from Me to XP. Me will go bye bye the hard format way.
