Navagon: What would you be receiving payments for? Is it something highly commercial or are you looking to accept donations? Cliffsky mentioned a couple of companies that will help you accept credit and debit card as well as paypal payments.
BMT Micro Fastspring At the moment I'm mainly looking to accept donations. I've had several people tell me that I should have a donate button in GogPM, and it sounds like a good idea.
Thanks for the suggestions. Those look interesting, but it seems like both FastSpring and BMT charge more than a dollar per transaction, which would seriously eat into small donations. Then again, BMT's "Comprehensive Plan" is a flat 20% - big percentage but no overhead, so it might work out well.
Barefoot_Monkey: Can anybody here recommend a good Internet payment system, like PayPal or Google Checkout? I want to be able to receive payments. Unfortunately neither PayPal nor Checkout is an option for me, so I'm investigating the alternatives.
AndrewC: You could try
Moneybookers or
Amazon Payments. Unfortunately I don't know for sure if they're available in SA but they're the most 2 prominent alternatives to PayPal & Google Checkout.
The problem is that most people are weary of unknown "brand" when it comes to payment processing and will avoid making a purchase if they don't easily recognize the name of the firm handling that.
Amazon Payments looks to have a very good customer experience, judging from their video. Also, those fees are excellent - 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction or better. That's as good as Google's rates, except that Amazon wins by charging 5% + $0.05 for payments less than $10. Unfortunately, Payments is for the US only, at least for a business account. Perhaps I could get a personal account and accept payments through that. I'll have to check more carefully when I have time.
Moneybookers looks like an excellent option. They charge next to nothing and explicitly say that they can transfer directly into my bank account. This looks like the best thing available. Thanks AndrewC. I'm still open to suggestions, but I'll mark this this as the solution.
