I have a Visa gift card and I'm having problems making a purchase on gog.com. It's saying that either I entered my info incorrectly or that there's a problem on the bank's end.

I'm thinking it might have something to do with where you have to enter your name since the card just says "Gift Card Recipient"

Has anyone gotten one of these to work on Gog?

A quick fix is to try a different browser than IE8.

I forgot how you can fix it without that. Clear the cookie cache?

I've tried on IE8 and Firefox. Could it be blocked because it's an overseas transaction? I checked the card's website and there doesn't seem to be any restrictions there.

Also, I did email GoG support but haven't heard back yet. (that's not a complaint...I just emailed them last night, gotta give them a little time, right?)

They don't have a 24/7 support crew, so you can forget about support being that fast. :)

It could be that the bank is blocking your purchase. Afaik, there are some banks (people have reported such things here) that don't allow transactions to Cypress (where GOG is registered as a company).

I've gotten the Vanilla Visa's to work in the past big thing was I had to basicly register the card on their website (list an address) and that cleared it up for me. This works because most gift cards (physical that are for would be accepted at say the gas station as well as online) are a credited system and there is no way to prove you own said card without the registering if you had the card in your hand at a store they wont have a problem either but telling the clerk a CC number and all that they would look at you funny :P +They can do at a real store putting the number in manually when the card wont read/Other various reasons+

You could always if you like put the money on the card to a PayPal funds and pay from there like that, yeah kinda of an annoying thing I know.

Hope it helps :)
I paid for my game with the same method as you and it worked out great. Did you go to giftcardstore.com to activate it. If not thats the problem.

Oooh, whops. I didn't read your post that thoroughly. You see, we've been having some unusual browser problems here for the last couple of weeks and almost every day we get a few question topics such as yours only with that reoccurring problem. After a while when you spot the key words (like Visa, problem, purchase, enter info...) you go into automatic "not this shit again".

Sorry, but I'm drawing a blank for your issue. Could be the bank, because of the thing which KavazovAngel described.
I did register it online but no luck. Oh well.

There are other ways. Thanks for all your input.

You could also try attaching it to your Paypal account and then paying with Paypal. After the money runs out you can keep using it also, just comes from your bank acct
did you activate it on the web site by entering adress, postal code ect?
You are not alone. I too had a problem using a Visa Gift Card on GOG.

When I contacted the Bank that issued the card (Wachovia) they told me the transaction was denied because it was a 'gambling' transaction, and the terms of service do not allow use of the card for online gambling. I emailed GoG support on the matter, but it took them too long (about a week) to tell me they didn't bill it as gambling. I used the same card at GoG before 2009, and did not run into this 'gambling' problem.

Googling to see if others had similar problems, I came across issues with the recently passed Credit Card Act of 2009 and the new definition of 'Foreign Transaction Fees'. ('Foreign Transaction Fees' are one of the few fees that are still allowed for Visa Gift Cards.) (Note: GoG's bank is located in Cyprus)

Apparently 'Foreign Transaction Fees' (for Wachovia Gift Cards anyway) were originally assessed only on purchases made in foreign currencies at foreign banks. But the 2009 Act made some of their other fees illegal immediately. So, they redefined 'Foreign Transaction Fees' to include all transactions made at forign banks (even in US Dollars), or any transactions made at US banks in foreign currencies.

Which is all well and good for newly issued Gift Cards, BUT ... without being able to retroactively redefine what was is a foreign transaction for Cards issued before 2009, they could feasibly end up losing money on some overseas transactions.

In my case I'm highly suspicious that they used any excuse not to honor my card because it fell into that odd category. Since the terms specifically state that the card can not be used for online gambling, - they claimed that GoG was billing it in that manner.

P.S. In another attempt to go through Paypal I ran into a different problem - The Information that the Gift Card company had was not identical to what GoG/Paypal had (e.g. name: Joe vs name: Joseph). When I contacted Paypal by phone I got a very helpful person who helped clear things up.

Paypal support is awesome. :)
Thanks for the info everyone, especially Halcazar. I won't bother going through all that when I can just use another card.

I thought that if it were an easy fix I go for it but that's just crazy!
I use a Visa Giftcard on GoG without a problem, have you tried registering your card online?

edit: nevermind, I posted this without reading the thread

If I remember correctly some of the gift cards require you to call the 1-800 # and verify it and authorize internet transactions with it. Once you do that you should be able to use it anywhere online.

It has something to do with the governments rules for the banks regulating transactions in case people are trying to funnel money to terrorists. Stupid, I know.
