Can anyone help me figure out the name of this game? I never actually played it but a long time ago I was at my uncles house, this would be somewhere between 1994 and 1998 and the game could be even older than that, but it was a space themed game and I thought it was really cool from watching him play.

The basic concept from what I remember is that you controlled a civilization and there were AI civilizations and you controlled planets or systems of planets and could make alliances with other civilizations and you could research technology like cloaking and other stuff. I know there is a space game based on the Civ 1 engine, but based on screen shots I'm not lead to believe its the same game. Anyone have any input? Sorry I can't be more specific but this was like 15 years ago. I don't think its on GoG either because I browsed screen shots of games that fit this description and nothing really looks like what I remember. As far as graphics go, they were pretty basic graphics, but the game screen did show the different planets and your options for what you can do on your turn (it was turn based if I remember correctly)

ANY input would be much appreciated!
Hm, there are many games that could fit here. Ascendancy? Galactic Civilizations? Master of Orion 2? (if so you're in luck, because you can buy it here). Space Empires, as suggested,...

Glad you found it, and hmm...now I'm going to have to look it up. If you want to +rep those awesome dudes/dudettes, just hover over their post and click the little green + sign.
The only space RTS I can think of that uses the original Civ1 engine is Alpha Centauri, which is meant as a direct sequel, being that one of the ways to win a game of Civ1 was to advance far enough to build a colony starship and launch it.

[EDIT]
My mistake, Alpha Centauri uses a modded Civ2 engine. But still it's meant to be a direct sequel.

No problem. In fact, I'm glad you reminded me of the game, as it prompted me to go to the developer's website - and it turns out they're not only still around, but about to release Ascendancy for the iPhone.

I don't actually own any of these new-fangled fancy-phones myself (and if I were to buy one, I would buy an Android-based one), but the fact that they are around and seem to hold the rights makes me hopeful that we'll get the PC-version on GOG. That would be so cool.

Damuna: Correction: It is a direct AWESOME.
I was given it and never ever managed to get it running... =(
I loved Ascendancy and Fragile Alliance. Need to hunt on ebay too see if I can find them.
