grviper: Swodr of the Stars 2 is up and what do we see right next to the main release on GamersGate? Yup, DLC

It's like they're asking for that badges quote. At least it's better than HoI3 DLC which offered music and sprites separately.

ne_zavarj: What did you expect ? It's a Steamworks game . :(
Which is a real shame because I can see how SotS 2 would have benefited from being both DRM-free and utilizing PI's own DRM-thingy which name escapes me right now. You know, the one that has achievements and such but is a completely optional system to use.

Hey guys I have this brilliant Idea

Let's take stuff out of the finished game, then sell it Seperately and call it "DLC"

spindown: I like Paradox, but their DLC is absolutely terrible. I mean, two DLC packs with skins, avatars and new music tracks on DAY 1?! And at a price that corresponds to 20% of the actual game? That is just about the worst kind of DLC imaginable -- completely unsubstantial and way overpriced.
They will eventually learn it. It will take some years, because managers are not the most intelligent species there is, but customers will teach them. After the millionth repetition of buying something else, somewhere else, they will have a flash of inspiration which will result in calling out that they invented a completely new thing, the wheel.
*ahem*

I personally have no problems with DLCs that only include graphical or aesthetical changes. They don't change the gameplay or make multiplayer problematic. If you are a huge fan or supporter, buy, if not leave it. There is no real incentive to buy this.

Especially if a game is a while on the market and has seen *brilliant* after release support (EUIII), I'm willing to shelf out 2 $ for some sprites to fund the continuing support of said game.

I find those 15$ Mappacks or "pre order exclusive weapons" a lot more anoying. Especially in a combatative gaming enviroment.

Agreed - in my view the DLC of images and music is nothing game changing at all and is simply making pre-order bonuses available to the general public. I didn't pre-order (computer might not be up to running the game :() so the fact that the DLC is quickly up for sale is great as it gives me the option to buy it if I so choose to.

Mappacks - eh my view is that if you want to release new and proper game content like that for something like an RTS game then its best done as a proper expansion pack with new units/items/options etc.. rather than just a few extra maps. This is especailly the case if whilst releasing the extra maps you also whithhold the map editor from the public (because then it is milking things).

Now if its something like the trains series where the maps are massive recreations of detailed real world places then yeah - far more work and worth the cost of even a single release.

Anyway only problem with Swots 2 at the moment is someone mucked up and released the beta on steam ;)

Navagon: Personally I'm surprised that Paradox have yet to produce DLC for DLC, so you can download content for your downloadable content.
Pretty sure they will do this with Magicka soon.

ceeker: unless I've got gamersgate blue coins about to expire.
They do?..

Elwin: They do?..
Only the ones you don't buy. If you purchase them or are gifted them then they stay in your account for good.

It wouldn't surprise me if a few trinkets were added to Vietnam.

DLC, Horse Armor for Oblivion in particular, is what killed this console generation of gaming.

Blatant cash grab, and the general public does not have the conviction to do without. As a result, the publishers are doing the right thing, taking money from fools.
Personally I am more disappointed that it's not DRM-free than I am because of the zero-day DLC.
