HijacK: Well, until then we're still far away from VR. You need to engage all the sense for it to be considered a reality. Smell is still far away from this and probably the hardest to achieve. Let's assume you get to that Triboobed alien in Duke Nukem Forever. Can you imagine how that thing smells? And how do you replicate that smell? Even better, how do you replicate the feeling of water on your body, or of wind blowing? We're still far from that, though we are advancing one step at a time.

Klumpen0815: Argh, GoG has let my post vanish.

Again: The flatmate of my brother (chemist) made a smell system for movie theaters once.
They mixed up all kinds of smells for a system that sprayed them in different combinations at a certain point, it wasn't finished and never made it into theaters though.
It's hard to implement, that's why. Plus some people are sensible to certain smells or outright allergic.

Well, nobody really wanted it, so it was just a science project after all and one time he got a vial of "circus smell" all over his clothes and smelled like lion hairs and sawdust for days.
This whole stuff was 10 years ago and nobody has developed it further because there is no interest in it as it seems.

Didn't Leisure Suit Larry 7s boxed version come with a smelly board where you had to rub a certain pad for a (mostly gross) smell when the game said so?

By request of the OP, I was asked to share this here :)

So I got my DK2 yesterday... and all I gotta say is wow

The screen is definitely better than the DK1 but of course 1440p and up would be better. Oculus has that covered anyway since they have that new prototype (Crystal Bay) that has a wicked screen, 360 degree tracking, and headphones) People that have used it have been saying it's good enough to release to the public now

I played Live for Speed (car game) and I can now say car games will *never* be the same on a flat screen again. Ever. The graphics aren't super-realistic/detailed or anything, but being able to sit in a car and look around at the side mirrors and rear-view mirror whilst driving AND glance over at the map (to the top right) certainly changes everything. I'm going to hook up my old steering wheel tomorrow night and see how that feels (I used a Logitech F710 originally)

Also played MinecRift... I thought it was good with my DK1 O.O The sense of scale is ridiculous and fixed now. It's actually tense as hell going into the caverns whilst trying to map them out with torches. And seeing those damn red spider eyes glowing in the dark is disconcerting (I hide in my house at night lmfao xD ). Oh yeah, I didn't know they now have baby zombies... kinda had a heart-attack finding out they exist down underground when they ran at me super fast O.O Everything is so different in-game. I came out of a cavern when it was sunset and it was nice standing at the cave entrance under cover whilst the sun went down. It started raining as it turned to night and it was so serene standing there in-game, listening to the rain and watching it fall just before me

The in-game head-tracking adds so much. Being able to lean around a corner or lean forward to check if anything is waiting is great. It certainly helps ground you in game

I'll be playing Elite: Dangerous later on but it might not work with the full head-tracking as you need a beefier CPU and GPU due to needing 75FPS @ 1920x1080 on the DK2 (75FPS is required for the proper head-tracking)

My DK2 took from ordering on July 30 until yesterday (10 October) to get here but it's definitely worth the wait IMHO (it's a 6-8 week turnaround till shipping for new orders now, apparently)

So yeah, just wanted to give you some feedback because of this thread. Just remember this is all my opinion and I'm a VR enthusiast so another persons mileage may vary

No idea what's he saying but if the Rift really works with RCT3, I'll be tap dancing happy. Still waiting for CV1.

Turn on Closed Captions.
Gonna get conspiratorial about this for a second... not that any of you would bother to look into this but...

Oculus is augmented reality. Augmented reality is a more friendly consumer form for augmented cognition, a long studied area within neuro-science. Augmented cognition isn't from ID, or Microsoft, or even IBM. Augmented cognition, technology for inserting human consciousness inside virtual worlds is straight from DARPA. DARPA is a research arm for the Department of Defense. Guys like Dr. Dylan Schmorrow and Dr. Peter Hancock have been paving the way for Oculus with their research into neuro-science and biometrics for a long time. These guys and people like them have been paid for by various grant foundations, the DOD, the DIA, and many other alphabet agencies. Oculus is just a consumer end-run product for what started from very serious military tech which involved projects like Warfighter and others. These were/are projects aimed at turning the 21st century into a very bloody and dangerous place for all of us.

Much of the work done for AugCog has been invested in by the Potomac Institute, a policy think tank in Washington that does a lot of other work for the DOD and DARPA, specifically. Their policy councils look like the city council for COBRA high command. Right out of a comic book.

I'm not going to point any more fingers than that... all I'm saying is that if you check out Oculus Rift or other augmented reality tech, actually look into it a little first. This isn't mouse or keyboard stuff here. We're talking heavy duty human engineering with practical applications... including software entertainment. They sometimes call that the carrot on a very long and expensive stick.

Do some research into Ray Kurzweil. Watch the circus monkeys start dancing. The guy's a combination of Timothy Leary and Skeletor. He would like everyone to turn into computers and conquer the universe in the name of science.

Slight correction here: the Oculus is Virtual Reality [VR], not Augmented Reality [AR]

http://ovrvision.com/
"In conjunction with the Oculus Rift, top quality AR (Augmented Reality) can be experienced through an HMD with an immersive FoV (Field of View). In contrast to devices like smart phones and web cameras, the Ovrvision gives an AR experience that incorporates the whole field of view. And through the use of both eyes, the available 3D depth perception makes the AR experience much more realistic."
That is irrelevant. The Oculus itself is not an augmented reality unit as I stated

Word cherry picking. Google augmented cognition Oculus Rift. I did, got 57,000 results.

Here's one more... nice title.

You're trying to confuse the tech with the underlying concepts. AR is just a more interactive form of software/hardware based VR. It's like saying a car isn't a car, it's a motor vehicle. It's both.

I'm not cherry-picking. The Oculus gives a closed virtual world experience, hence why it's [called] Virtual Reality and not Augmented Reality

It does not as itself augment reality, except with that add-on you present that wasn't even around a few months ago

Yes, I'm being anal
I got the opportunity to try out the device in May this year. Can't say I fell in love with it. It made my eyes hurt very quickly. I know, it wasn't the final product, but nevertheless I pretty much lost all interest after that. Besides, even without the hurt, I don't think it was that great. I'll still prefer to play my games by looking at a monitor, rather than have this...thing strapped on my head.
i think i will buy it the consumer version that is unless the price is gonna be higher then what they talked about
The DK1 really didn't impress me too much...mostly because I suffer from motion sickness. However, the DK2 is a far superior device and has really made me very excited for the eventual release of the Consumer Version. I wouldn't be surprised if the CV1 is just as much of a jump (or more!) in tech as the DK2 was to the DK1, so it will definitely be worth paying attention to.

Also, if anyone is curious, I have created a GOGmix collecting all of the games on GOG that have native Oculus Rift support. Granted, there are other games here that can be modified to work with the Rift, and there are games that may receive Rift support in future patches, but I am focusing purely on the games you can buy on GOG that will work with the Rift right now with just a few mouse clicks. Let me know what you think, and if you think I missed any. I'll try my best to keep it up to date. ^_^
