Arteveld: taste: i dislike the NFS franchise due to it's limitations like car damage and stuff, and the too fast & furious approach.

quality: well, doesn't look remarkably nice, the performance, as usual, a bit below the expectations, the car physics [hitting other cars] is hilarious at moments.

overall: criterion tried to pull off something worthwhile out of this, but still, burnout paradise was a much better game [arcade racing wise], and i'm saying this as a fan of the first two hot pursuits.
So, yeah, some say, it's the new NFSHP i say, it's just a new NFSHP, and between HP2 and this, we got better things.
Does NFS Shift have good damage, and is it a good racer? I haven't played many NFS games besides the original arcadey ones, Underground, Most Wanted, and a sliver of Carbon.

I wouldn't say it's spectacular in any field. The cockpit views are really cool, like particularly good, I thought. They alone made it worth playing for me. The simple effects they used to represent speed are pretty cool too - your car starts to rattle like it's about to fall apart if you get going pretty fast. I don't know, that + 3D made me like the game, but I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone.
Single player's fine except for the fact that there's only so much to do until you've done all of the events. Free roam with random speeder encounters would've been nice. So would've a client/server architecture instead of this stupid Autolog system that kicks me for 'performance' issues when my system and Internet connection are up to snuff.
The main draw for Hot Pursuit has to be the multiplayer and Autolog features. If you're not using those, it's probably just a great arcade game.

Cambrey: Fortunately generic cars get damages, otherwise I wouldn't like as much.
But can You/Your competition drive them? Or are they just road clutter?

I think the only NFS with damage was Porsche Unleashed. You should ask someone who plays NFS, i'm not into that franchise.

Continuing my EA-disgust rant [joke?]:
In the age of GTAs and Burnout's, closed circuit racing is a bit obsolete. While there's nothing bad about making retro games [i'd love to make early 90s inspired games myself!] i don't think NFSHP aim was to make a game from 1996 with new GFX. And, frankly, the new NFS seems to be just that, a relic. Repainted and restored, but still sinking.

You can't drive them. Their only purpose is to add some realism by spicing up your game with traffic, which is a lot of fun (and frustration) when you race or when you get chased by the cops. :)

There are 90 different cars to drive in TDU not to mention the countless cars that you can add to your game via mods.

Yeah, but it's 90 invincible cars, i understand the car manufacturers approach. but i still think it's senseless/moronic, nameless cars can crash, but a shitty Lambo can't, and we all know how those handle, so it's just a matter of time til one hits a wall. Perhaps i'll give TDU a chance someday, but it's not my type of racing. Oh, and thanks for reminding me of that one, i nearly forgot TD are still made.;)
Maybe it would be worthwhile to wait for a few months more and play TDU2 :) The sequel is coming out soon, I can't wait!

Anyway, I agree with the first post. After starting the first race in new NFS HP, I got hit by awesome nostalgia of racing around in those old NFS with my neighbour when we were kids :) Good times

I may get this since I love Burnout and this is supposed to be like the old ones. I really didn't like Paradise as I had to stare at a map half of the time, the open world thing really did nothing for me and made the game worse.
I actually stopped playing NFS games after NFS III: Hot Pursuit, as I don't like the Fast & Furious style underground games for some reason. So this is very good news for me, and I may just look into it. I loved NFS III. Great game.

There were 3 more arcade style games made after NFS3. High Stakes, Porsche 2000 & Hot Pursuit 2. You should check them out if you liked NFS3, i think there are mods to get them running on newer versions of windows.
