Embark on the Quest of the Avatar to become the ultimate paragon of the Eight Virtues!

[url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/ultima_4]Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar is a milestone in not only the Ultima franchise, but in the Role-Playing Games genre as a whole. You start as an average character, neither a scoundrel nor a saint. After defeating the Triad of Evil (Mondain, Minax and Exodus), Sosaria has changed beyond recognition. The benevolent monarch Lord British proclaimed the Eight Virtues (Honesty, Compassion, Valor, Justice, Sacrifice, Honor, Spirituality, and Humility) as a moral foundation of the new land, united under the banner of Britannia. This time there is no ultimate bad guy you need to kill after leveling your character to the max. This time it’s different. Your quest is to become the Avatar, a real role model for the people of Britannia. Become one with the Eight Virtues with your actions and words. As you live the life of a potential hero you discover that every action you undertake influences your level in each of the Virtues. Flee from battle and your Valor decreases, overpay a blind seller and you gain Compassion points. Even in modern times the concept of Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar is unique. Even if the graphics aged, this is a prime example of a gaming masterpiece!
The best part is that Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar is available for FREE on GOG.com! Download it now and immerse yourself in the world of Britannia.

anjohl: When I wsa a kid, this game was *always* in Nintendo Power magazine, and it looked magical. I never had the chance to prove it...this is such great news! Also, I always pronounced it "Quest of the Ave-Eh-Tuhr". Anyone else do the same?

amccour: The NES port of U4 is kind of terrible. They took out the conversation. Talking to NPCs is like half of the game.
Well, thank god for this GOG release then!

Nomad_Soul: So, putting aside game mechanics and trying to gun for a particular starting class, what virtue/class do you guys end up with when trying to answer the questions as naturally and honestly as possible? There's some random elements to it, but it's still fun to ask!
This is quite touch call. I have tried many times, and I end up differently. Those questions are really hard and there is no right answer for them.

Tried just once, and I ended up between Spirituality and Sacrifice. And Spirituality was my final call (ranger)

Btw, there is good guide at Gamefaqs, which gives LOTS of info about all things in Ultima IV.

Selling of this one for free is a magnanimous act and shall not be forgotten!

Giving this one away in a GOG package is truly a virtuous act of GOG as it is also a virtuous act of EA/Bioware and the site Ultima Forever to let us enjoy The Quest of the Avatar for free.
Hopefully now we can go on to V, VI, and VII.

Every week? I wish, this happens every day exactly at the same time.

RafaelLopez: *That's* native Windows alright. Still, I'm kind of suspicious of a port if the real thing is already awesome and pretty much bug-free. I've heard Exult is great but not without errors.

Gonadius: I noticed a couple of minor graphical glitches when I played itp kO through a couple of times three years back or so, but nothing major, I think it also prevents a couple of bugs I ran into in the original release. That and it (optionally) adds a few of the improvements from Serpent Isle - A keyring (A godsend... I remember having a bag full of just keys... Dozens of them!) and an improved character sheet to name but two.
I think you're right about the improvements in Exult.

Exult is cool too because it was ported to systems like the Sony PSP for the win! :-)
