We've been announcing this to all and sundry, but if you still didn't know - The Witcher Enhanced Edition is now available on GOG.com! And because, we here at GOG.com like to stir things a little, so to show you how much we love The Witcher franchise we’re running a two week promo starting now.

Before venturing into [url=http://www.gog.com/tw2]The Witcher 2 world and continuing Geralt’s epic story, stop by and check out how it all began with the award winning CD Projekt RED's foray into PC game development. The Witcher is an action-RPG, based on a best selling fantasy saga written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The game features the titular witchers who are monster hunters for hire with supernatural powers. You will be controlling Geralt, one of the witchers, in the rich, deep and enthralling medieval fantasy world created by Sapkowski. Starting the game, Geralt remembers nothing. Kaer Morhen, the last remaining keep of the witchers, was attacked by a mysterious organization, and although the attack has been repulsed the secret recipe for the mutagen, a substance required to create more of your kind, has been stolen. You know what you have to do right? To give you a tip, we'll say you will be fighting ferocious monsters with the help of a revolutionizing and award winning combat system and saving damsels in distress.

During the next two weeks we have a special promo and The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director’s Cut is available for you with a 50% discount and will cost you only 4.99$! Can you really resist such great deal?

serpantino: The 35 on it is a revision I think, or a runtime. TomNook is right, though you have Directx9 installed,

Edit: Yeah it's an older revision from June 2007 and it is indeed in that link above (just downloaded it and checked it.)
Does that mean that you have to replace DX11 with DX9? Or can you have the two running in parallel?

I suppose I could just replace DX11 for the duration of the BG playing - but I tend to have several games on the go, so I can match the game to mood and time available.
Wow... I've been playing again this game for about a week now. I remembered that it was a great game, but not THAT great. It has aged veeery well (actually it's so smooth on a recent computer, loading times are so fast, that the experience is more pleasurable than before).
If you're about to play the Witcher 2 and haven't played the first one, hold your horses and don't miss to complete this first opus before starting the second. It's one of the few best action/adventure/roleplaying games of the past years.

They are independent of each other.

Arteveld: Ok, so

setup_the_witcher_enhanced_edition-3.bin got merged, but it's chunks remained. This successfully filled my HD leaving less than 2GB free space, the 4th bin file was not merged, but it's chunks are still here. The 5th bin file was merged, chunks deleted. The GOG downloader shows the entry as completed and ready for installation.

Is there a possibility to merge the 4th bin, without re-downloading everything again?

GOGTeam investigate? :D

[edit]
Checking what the installer thinks about it.
Yeah, it tells me, the 4th bin is missing, no surprise there.
worked fine for me - the chunks for the 3rd bin remained after downloading so just deleted them. installing now and seems to be fine.

pretty damn impressed with GOG for this great offer - i've never played this before, but for $4.99 it's a steal !!

CyPhErIoN: that artbook and the extras are just awesome
why the hell do you sell this at only 4.99$???????????????
It's fairly obvious, really. Everyone that would have bought it at $50 or $20 has bought it already. However, The Witcher 2 is the new upcoming hotness, and they can generate a larger initial install base by selling the original game(which has already been profitable) for a low price. More people playing The Witcher means more people overall will enjoy playing The Witcher and want more, aka The Witcher 2 which hasn't been profitable yet. =P

Thanks, that's the sort of info that often seems obvious to everyone who knows it.

Unfortunately to the rest of us getting one version of something usually involves either uninstalling or overwriting the other version.

So this sort of info is really useful.

I take it that each game (or whatever) will use the best version for that game - or do I have to tell it what to use and where to find it?

Most of the applications, games included, will automatically use files they actually need.

Not at all. :) it just adds a lot of the revision packs. The game will choose which one to use.
Is the CD key for this redeemable on steam?
The other day I was advised to put this game on Hard since the combat was apparently very easy. Well I've died time and time again on Normal, so I'm glad I didn't put it on Hard in the end. It's true that much of the combat is very simple, enemies dying in one or two hits, but I've got into fights in which I've been beaten silly in about 5 seconds and then got a game over.

There was one area in which I put on the regen potion and the dodge/parry potion and still got killed before I'd done much damage to the enemy. Just now on what I assume is the boss of Chapter 1, I was taken into the fight by a cutscene and then killed by the time I'd got about 4 attacks off. So maybe it does get easier later on, but right now I'm completely at the whim of the random difficulty spikes.

What is this phantom key you speak of?
Is this DRM Free too?

Man, couldn't resist this! Probably first English RPG for me (Don't know if I will get hold on it since I only play Japanese style RPG before). Not only they have all these amazing extra goodies, it now even supports so many languages. You are amazing GOG !
I think The Witcher combat system is excellent, it just has a steep learning curve. Once you get used to the rhythm and the look of each attack. you can string combos together easily by watching for when he finishes each move in a sequence.

Btw, does anyone know how long this promo has left to run? I still need a couple more days to find $5 for the GOG version.

It runs until 24/25 May as far as I know.

if you keep the difficulty on medium it's fairly simple. Choosing fighting style according to enemy type. Click whenever flame symbol appears. When aard (mostly igni) is loaded again, right click in direction of enemies.

But I really licked it. Not the usual clicking orgy but a simple timing game. Actually over the years I got less and less attracted by combat in rpgs. I just realized that such combats are always quite boring.
