Hi there viewers, this is Crystal Eyes and you're tuned into SLIP T.V.

In [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/slipstream_5000]Slipstream 5000 you take on the role of a pilot one of the ten various racing crafts (skimmers) which differ in handling, speed, and fighting capabilities. Travel around the globe and take part in a world championship televised by SLIP TV. Race your way through a bunch of scenic venues like the Grand Canyon, the bustling streets of Chicago, the ancient landmarks of Egypt, or an underground cave in France. There are various barriers on your way to the finish line like bridges, dividers, or natural obstacles. Flying at high speed through New York City and making a U-turn at the Statue of Liberty is the ultimate fun ;) As in every exceptional racing game the circuit variety is big, ranging from easy circular tracks to complicated and branching endurance tracks. Discover shortcuts, pick up power-ups or weapons and use them wisely to blast your way towards victory. You can either take part in the SLIP TV championships or master individual tracks in the single race mode. The distilled fun of flying across the Grand Canyon and shooting your enemies to catch up to them is enough to recommend this game to every adrenaline fan here on GOG.com! Don’t wait--pick up your DRM-free copy of Slipstream 5000 for only $5.99!

Truck: I WANT HI OCTANE ON GOG
As far as I recall, HiOctane was one of those action (racing) games that was released just before the arrival of 3D accelerators for PCs. Thus, either I had to play it in awful looking 320x240 low resolution graphics, or then bump the resolution to clean looking 640x480, but the game would run veeeery slowly on most PCs (at least mine). Games like these made me sad and I didn't regain happiness until I saw hires VQuake running on Rendition Verite in a local gaming fair, or played 3Dfx Voodoo version of hires Mechwarrior 2 and Descent 2. :) :) :)

But I guess the hires (SVGA) mode of HiOctane would run fine on today's hardware. In fact my meaning has been to re-run some of the worst culprits (like many SVGA flight sims, was it USNF or EF2000 or whatever, running in 1024x768 SVGA) which made people to bemoan how no-one could possibly afford a PC powerful enough to run those game (other than in lores mode).

What I'd like to see the most would be a 3D accelerated (Direct3D?) version of HiOctane, and why not also Slipstream. I think games like these which were boasting good looking games have not aged as gracefully as games where the flashy graphics were not the the main point. "Incoming", anyone?

Seems nice, but I'm still waiting for PowerDrome to come here :-P
Might have already been posted but this on sale at Gamersgate at the moment, 50% off. So around half the price of GoG for anyone buying it now

I bought it for a few cents, but didn't really think it was a good idea to bring that up here, since I saw nobody mention it until now. I've yet to play it, as I bought some forty games and have been too busy cataloging and storing them. However, it seems to be a DOS game, as like Normality and Litil Divil, GamersGate's installer immediately comes up with an "Abort/Retry/Ignore" window, so I'll probably have to do things manually.

I've had Jagged Alliance for months from them, but could not for the life of me figure out how to install it. It always said that it couldn't find a file, but the file in question was, I believe, in a folder called "root", which I even tried mounting to the D: drive in DOSBox, but to no avail. There's no documentation or help of any sort on GamersGate, so after about a month I gave up entirely. Hopefully Slipstream 5000 will be better.

dmetras: Is this kinda like a flying F-Zero? Except with weapons and slower speeds?

lowyhong: Eh. Yeah. Something like that. But some of the race tracks are pretty large, particularly the first one in the canyon.
Then I'll add this to my wishlist.

Ah, I wasn't aware they didn't put as much effort into ensuring the game would ran with minimal fuss.

Steam and GG do the same with most older games....sell them as is. It's up to the buyer to config and run them.

Except Steam is pre-configured with DOSBox and config files, and would be easy to get running in DOSBox even if neither were included. GamersGate doesn't use DOSBox at all, it's installers don't seem to get you anywhere, and my own attempts at configuring DOSBox to play them have failed.

barleyguy: Slipstream 5000 is one of my all time favorite racing games. It's in 3 dimensions and has weapons. And the layout of each track causes a variety of different strategies.

In reply to the network support question, if I remember correctly it was IPX/SPX, i.e. Novell Netware. So it's unlikely that it will work now.
Sorry to raise this from the dead, but since there's so many DosBox games here it's worth noting that DosBox is capable of IPX emulation over IP - it takes some config hacking and an extra command to start/join the server, but it works well. Would be nice if GOG preconfigured it for people that don't know DosBox inside out.
