Gaming industry’s legend invites you to play a game that was way ahead of it’s time.

Try this masterpiece by the one and only Sid Meier. In [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/sid_meiers_alpha_centauri]Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri you’re one of the survivors of the UNS Unity, a seedship designed to colonize a far star system. You wake up after the long cryogenic sleep and discover that someone murdered the ship’s captain. The crew divides into groups of adversaries, of which you choose one of the seven survivor factions. Ally or wage war with them for supremacy over the new planet. With lot’s of customization, research and deep gameplay possibilities you can tweak every part of your units, armors, weapons, you name it! And with tons of useful technology to research in different categories (Conquer, Explore, Build and Discovery) you have many ways to achieve your goals. Choose your faction and play the ultimate Civilization in space!
just to add my 2 cents: personally i dont really care if an expansion pack is included or not. more is nice, but not required for me to buy something.

I'm not fussed that Alien Crossfire isn't included, Alpha Centauri is fantastic either way (even if it's learning curve if fairly steep imho). I'll muck around with it soon enough and see if I can remember how to play, or have a long sit down with the huge manual and refresh my memory... ;P

Whiterabbit-uk: Abandonware sites are not illegal,
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... oh wait your serious? Someone somewhere has the copyright to a game nomatter how old BECAUSE NONE ARE OUT OF COPYRIGHT YET. So their copyright still exists and unless they give permission the games CANNOT be distributed legally simple as.

Sure, and the sky is really more yellow than blue if you just tilt your head and squint a bit.

It's a misconception that the games are void of copyright just because they are no longer "officially supported". The copyright is still valid for a longer period than may be left of your lifespan, due to the copyright laws that are in effect in most of the world, so abandonware sites are definitely not legal as a general rule.
Just wanted to add my voice to the rest. I own the originals, and would re-buy these if Alien Crossfire was available as well.

Come on EA / GoG! Give us a combo pack!
I want this game but can't afford it atm. I had to choose between this and Crusader so I bought Crusader. Will get it later though.

FraterPerdurabo: The word on the street is that the unofficial fan patch is highly recommended for this game. It applies to both SMAC and SMAX.
'interesting' 'nick name' you got there....... (though - thought that only, long gone, A.C. would use that one.....)

Trilarion: Just keep in mind that in the UK you can buy this game including the expansion boxed for less than 4 pounds. Being in the EU this just adds moderate shipping costs. So for a little more than the price here you can get the full experience which I can say is very much worth it.

Example:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sid-Meiers-Alpha-Centauri-Complete/dp/B001RIYNF2
EUR 5.79 from play.com PlayTrader , including expansion AND free shipping......
http://www.play.com/Games/PC/4-/8902886/Sid-Meier-Alpha-Centauri-Complete-Edition/Product.html

Edit :
(But ofcourse this version perhaps will not run as well on a newer O.S. as the GOG version would..... )

Edit 2 :
I bought the game a long time ago at Play.com. Please notice that the version sold there at the moment might require you to patch the game manually for running on XP (Patch is included on the CD as far as I remember) ( I also think that an ini file edit were required - but it is so long time ago that I installed the game last time so I can hardly remember , please look at Firaxis' page regarding this :
http://www.firaxis.com/games/game_detail.php?gameid=7 )
Summary (if an ini file edit is necessary) :
Alpha Centauri.ini File (located in the Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri game folder)
change:
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=0
to
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1
Save changes
Run game
You may still receive an error message. If so click OK and the game should load fine.

Whiterabbit-uk: I used to own the Alpha Centauri disc, but gave it away as I found it utterly disappointing. This was available on several abandonware sites until GOG got their hands on it. Home of the Underdogs being a good site has removed the download. It seems to me that GOG and it's counterpart (not mentioning any names) are hoovering up all the best of the old games that would normally become abandonware titles after around 10 to 15 years. (not that all old games go that way).

Of the forty or so games I've purchased from GOG I actually used to own the Discs or floppies years ago for most of them, but as the operating systems evolved many of those games no longer worked. I'm loath to have to purchase new livcences when I've already purchased them previously, but hey it's my own fault for not knowing about emulators back when I got rid.

On the whole I think GOG and it's counterpart are doing a fantastic job, I just wish they would leave some of the games for the abandonware sites to give away. I feel I've earned a few perks after the thousands of pounds I've spent on games over the past 35 years. No doubt there will be some naysayers on this issue, lol. :)
I've bought a lot from GOG.com , including titles I probably already got on discs.....
But I am not as dependable , as the rest of you seems to be, that the game must be Windows whatever compatible , because I am sitting with a KVM switch to which I can attach at least 8 PCs , so at any point in time I get too tired of any incompatability problems I can just go to my stash of old hardware and old original O.S.' and setup and attach an old style PC if I please.
I like GOG.com for it's ease, extra content, DRM free and very often cheap games that I can just buy, download and run on my new PC.
But if EA think that they can make me buy whatever at whatever price and at whatever conditions and with whatever EULA then they are sadly mistaken - when it comes down to that then it is not lack of neither old hardware nor old software that makes me come here - I got plenty of that (legal, original and paid for that is !!!)
And B.T.W. , at this point in time you can get KVM switches for 2 or 4 PCs (including attached cables) rather cheap and an old PC you can get for nothing or next to nothing many places.... So if anyone wants to run old software on old hardware then that need not set you that much back financially.....

(Since you confessed to be a "fan" then my response perhaps ought to be)

I wouldn't mind it if EA wanted to sell us the expac as a separate game. Bring onto me the Alien Crossfire! (Oh, and Red Alert 2+YR please)
I add my voice to have the expansion, maybe as a separate buy.
Thank you Thank you Thank you for including the expansion! I have wanted to own it for 10 years, but I couldn't find a copy! what a deal!
Another entry into the Necro Hall of Fame

:P
