I totally agree, in the sense that FPS are about gameplay and the gameplay of an fps doesn't combine well with a story if it has good gameplay.
In fact i don't know a single fps title with great gameplay that had a good story.
If i want a great story and gameplay that blends in well with it, i play adventure games or read a book.
Its really a pity what commercial fps have become today(halo,killzone,modernwarfare2,bioshock etc etc), generic gameplay and stories that range from bad to satifactory and that don't combine the gameplay and story well at all, it just hasn't been done yet.
When will we see a story with the caliber of Planescape torment well implemented with the gameplay on a fps? Probably never. When will we see a mainstream(underground games are the way to look these days for gameplay) game with better gameplay then quake 3(some people have no idea of how complex the game is, now quake live is the "new" thing and its very similar to quake 3) ? Probably never.
Here is a video commentary of what went through the mind of a pro-player, while playing quake live in the final.

I hope now some people understand what fps were about back in the day.
Well what about Doom?
Doom has the best story of any FPS, and the gameplay is pretty good too.
