Another great gem has hit our catalog. Forget about building bases, gathering resources and amassing hordes of units to rush at the enemy - in Ground Control it's all about tactics and efficiency.
Ground Control is real-time tactical game. As such, the player doesn't have to worry about resource management, building structures or mass-producing units. Instead, the game feels more like commanding an actual hi-tech army. You have a limited number of units, which you load onto drop-ships. Then, after touching down on the LZ you have that many units available to complete your objectives. You have to focus on actual command, as you can't just mine more minerals and throw more and more cannon fodder towards the enemy. Aside from some great gameplay, there's also an interesting storyline, bound to keep you immersed for a long time.
Great news but wasn't this released as freeware?
Bah, who cares... added to the basket :)

Yes. However, it didn't include the expansion, and $5.99 isn't much.
That's a nice surprise!
Will probably add this to my collection.
What's the difficulty like? I've never been any good at these sorts of games >_>
Minor question: I remember not buying this game because it had no in mission saving. Sometimes I am not the master of my own time and replaying a mission from scratch because i couldn't save it never interested me. I only read about this though, so I'm not sure if with the expansion this "feature" was removed or if it even existed at all?
If I can save anytime, I'll keep the game on my wishlist (since I'm broke at the moment)

Me too. I end up buying so many of them and giving up because i suck at them.
On a scale of 1-5 ( 1 being hardest ) how does this rate ?
My beloved game finally! I played it lot few years ago and next to Homeworld it's best classic I saw. Still have first box release with addon but as soon as I saw it in catalogue I bout it instatntly.
Difficulty is IMO about "2" on your scale, "thornton_s". Game could be hard, but it's easier than for example World in Conflict

The game's difficulty, if you set it to easy, is really, really easy. I'm a baby when it comes to RTS games, and I was very comfortable.
Is there a way to add in in-mission saves? I got half way through the campaign before giving up because it wanted me to restart a mission after about 2 hrs of play. Heh, no chance.
The game seemed awesome, but i'm not buying it unless there is a way to save in mission. I don't have that much time to waste.

That's good to know. =)
I'd grab this today If it was supported by Xfire. I've got GCII, but have been waiting for the first game to be supported. Including the ex-pack is great, though.

Important question, + rep.
This game is great but 2 is really better than this. I hope Ground Control 2 will come to GOG too.

It's not, and here's why: it's more of an RTS than an RTT. To improve upon GC1, you'd have to boost that aspect, not re-add features that were originally taken away to make the game as good as it was. It's kind of a shame, not many really tried to go with GC1's formula and improve on it.
So, GC2 might still be a good game, but it's more in line with the standard RTS fare, thus kind of redundant, and not really where you'd end up if you set out to make a better RTT game.
