Today we’re adding another classic FPS to our ever-growing catalog, ArmA: Gold Edition, for the paltry price point of $9.99. This version of the game includes the original ArmA: Armed Assault and its expansion Queen’s Gambit.

Bohemia Interactive worked hard on delivering a sequel to their award winning franchise, taking years to release ArmA: Gold Edition. This military simulator takes place on a fictional Atlantic island of Sahrani, divided into two countries: the communist dictatorship in the north and the democratic kingdom in the south. When US forces stationed there leave the southern country for training, the northern neighbour attacks. You are one of the US soldiers that hasn’t left the island yet, so you join the local militias and fight the aggressive regime!

The terrain featured in the campaign measures up to 400 square kilometers, and is beautifully rendered by the Real Virtuality 2 engine. All of the weapons and vehicle models are made in great detail, but apart from looking real they behave like the real ones too. Sighting, weapon ballistics, damage, recoil, and reloading are some of the things that were designed to be as real as they can get. The main campaign offers over 20 missions with non-linear scenarios and on top of that the Queen’s Gambit adds two more campaigns, one connected with the main campaign, the other one features a group of mercenaries that are all about stealth and efficiency. If you manage to accomplish all three campaigns, and you still haven’t got enough of ArmA, you can create your own missions with the built-in editor. If you aren’t the mission building type yourself, you can still use the editor to load up and play one of the hundreds mods that are already made by the fans!

ArmA: Gold Edition is DRM-Free as always and can be yours for only $9.99.
How does Gold Edition compare to Cold War Assault?

I bought Cold War Assault and it was just too poorly executed for me. Endless, pointless cut scenes. Missions which made no sense. Mission bugs.

At one point in one of the earlier missions, my squadron and I were guarding the middle of the town, indefinitely. No more enemies to kill, no assault coming, we were just guarding it with no end in sight. I pressed the button to make the time fast forward and I left the computer. I came back a little while later and no change. I have other stories like this. Were some of them my fault? Maybe, but I do research and I'm used to playing old games like this that need a lot of attention and love. I definitely encountered some game breaking bugs.

That said, is this Gold Edition any better? I could tell that if Cold War Assault were polished and refined and executed as intended, then it would have been awesome. I hope I can play a realistic FPS one day like how it was meant to be.

HereForTheBeer: Besides the graphical prettiness, is this a decent upgrade from Operation Fla... errr... ArmA: Cold War Crisis?
Hell yes it is. Better graphics and AI, more varied terrain, and the best campaign system of the whole series (slightly non linear: you have the "story" missions and some optional ones, which are usually quite difficult and can influence the story missions. Example: let's say you have to hit a major enemy port in a combined arms assault. You can dive right in, or play a spec-ops mission blowing up a comm centre, which if successful, denies air support to the enemy in the port). Scenario is however less interesting that Cold War Crisis, but I feel it's better written that original ArmA 2's hollywood-y action b-movie plot.
Realistic Wargames? Neh, not my kind of game.
What GOG sorely lacks are more intelligent puzzle games, like The Incredible Machine.
Great new release, wishlisted

I have to make an important note here: I really like how GOG lately has been adding games with multiple languages, it's very important that if the language was available at the game - then it should be included as a choice during the GOG release

Looks like I'll be playing through this just like I did with the first Witcher - Both in English and Russian :)
Bohemia looks like very honest independent developer and publisher. I might buy this game later to show some support.

Not Irishian? ;)
Very nice. Was beginning to despair over the lack of interesting games recently. I'll have to pick it up once I'm finished with Battlefield 3's multiplayer.
I'm happy that GOG released this title. I don't care how new or old a game is, if the people responsible are willing to stick to the 0 DRM and and price points, I say come one and all. I'm purchasing this one as I speak.
Its not ... old...
I can get it from other places, but i can't get old games from a lot of places.
Cool release. I, like everyone else, don't want to see good old games shafted to release newer, crappier games, but this is a game I've had my eye on for a while over at GG. Wishlisted.

EDIT: GG, I still love you, but you know that love is for Paradox and indie titles.

But it's a good thing... Even "new games" are being sold on GOG without DRM. If it helps the site grow/convince more publishers, why not?

Cook: Patience my young jedi, we'll get more games for you :)
Hopefully as GOG open the service up to more price points and more games we will see more than 2 releases per week.
A nice addition, but from what I hear if you are new to the genre you should hold out for ArmA 3.
Amazing... this is the first new game I've seen at GOG that didn't immediately have at least a couple reviews posted on the game page. Ain't nobody gonna give this game some 'love'?
it's games like these that make me wish I had a better computer
