With today's release of probably the best installment of the famous fantasy strategy game series, we complete the Age of Wonders trilogy on GOG.com.

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic is the final and arguably best part of the Age of Wonders trilogy. It is believed that it was originally designed as an expansion pack, but has matured into a complete, stand-alone game. The most notable improvement, when compared to Age of Wonders 2, is the addition of a random map generator, which gives it infinite replayability after you beat its great single-player campaign. Other new features include deities, three new races and a couple of new gameplay mechanics which make the game that much more fun and challenging. There's also a lot of fan-made content, quite often very impressive. Overall, it's a rock-solid turn-based strategy game and if you like Master of Magic or Heroes of Might & Magic, you must give it a try. You won't be disappointed and may end up with a new addiction.

wenchwogg: I would have bought this off GOG if they had the triple pack for 19.99 like Steam did.....
GOG is cheaper.

Steam Trilogy pack 19.99 Euro = 28 USD
GOG AoW + Aow2 + AoW:SM = 5.99 + 9.99 + 9.99 USD = 25.97 USD

awww, stupid me - I forgot about steam's "regional pricing". ok. but that is just another reason to buy it from gog ;-)

Thanks for a tuesday (& non rpg) release :-)

I was tempted to buy this on NAME REDACTED earlier, but didn't. Will buy here once I'm done replaying AoW 1 (which is awesome).

This looks very good and in fact I'm in a serious mood for a good strategy game. :D Should I start with this one (which apparently is considered the best) or are there reasons (story, maybe?) to start chronologically?

diegopmc: are there reasons (story, maybe?) to start chronologically?
From what I read here on forum, this is the main but probably the only reason.
The best part of Age of Wonders for me was the fantastic soundtrack. Does Shadow Magic have as awesome music as the first part in the series?

GoJays2025: To somebody who has no real experience with this series, is this the best one to start with?

Aviadmd: Yes!
And to be honest the only one you need to own , best one in the series+random map generator + great community support.
Have you actually played the first Age of Wonders? It is a truly great game and it is different from Shadow Magic in many ways.
There is no reason to buy Age of Wonders 2 - Wizards Throne however, unless you want to play its campaign, since AoW - Shadow magic is an improved version of AoW 2.

The first Age of Wonders is generally regarded in the community as the one with the best campaign and music. The campaigns are however not what I would consider the greatest part of these games and there is nothing wrong with picking up Shadow Magic first and AoW 1 later.

Both AoW and AoW - Shadow Magic are really great games that I think most fans of turn-based strategy games will really enjoy.

I don't think you would lose much if you played the third game before the first as their stories separate tales, though with some connections. AoW SM is considered the best by more people, but AoW 1 is considered the best by many people too. They are both similar and different enough to both be worth our time and money, you should buy the one you want the most first.
