Hi,

I'm trying to play Down in the Dumps (Haiku Studios 1996) but I'm having one issue after the other.

First I attempted to install the game the usual way in DosBox but typing "install" resulted in:

"DOS/4GW error (2001) exception 00h (divided by zero) at 160:001A1A1775"

The entire error log:

Then I decided to install the game in Microsoft Virtual PC (Win 98se) which worked but the in-game sound was all stuttery and the game ran too slow.

Then I copy/ pasted the installed gamefiles from Virtual PC to the Dosbox HD which allowed me to start the game but without sound and music.

Does anyone know what this error means and how I can get this game to run with sound in DosBox or Virtual Pc or Windows 7.

I'm using:

Windows7 64
DosBox SVN Daum (also tried installing with regular DosBox)
Ms Virtual PC with Win98se

System:
i7920
560ti
6gb ram

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Check if the sound setting between virtual Pc and dosbox are the same (the irq!), so you might be able to use the copied over version.

The ones of dosbox can easily be changed by modifying the options file.
i think a virtual windows xp environment might work better.

some games can be very tricky and only work fine in 1 certain virtual os.
like for me star trek generations only works in xp, not 95/98 or windows 7.

There may be a sound configuration file that the installer generates during installation. See if there is some kind of default or dummy file in the game directory.

Failing that, is there a separate DOS4GW.EXE file in the CD directory? Try downloading DOS32A and rename the file DOS32A.EXE to DOS4GW.EXE. That's solved plenty of problems with DOS extenders in the past.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

Qbix: The settings are identical in Virtual PC and DosBox.

lugum: Perhaps, but I think it's unlikely since this game was released in 1996 and only comes with a Dos installer (despite claiming it's compatible with both Dos and Windows 95, the actual installer is a Dos installer).

jamyskis: Unfortunately it doesn't generate a sound config file (like Setsound) or at least none that I could find. The game auto-detects the soundcard prior to installing the actual files. There is however a DOS4GW.exe on the installation CD. Where should I place this DOS32A file?

edit:

This is the installation folder:

From the Readme:

*SoundBlaster
-------------

Down in the Dumps will operate with any SoundBlaster sound card,
or 100% compatible.

The music and sound effects in Down in the Dumps require an initialised
BLASTER environment. This environment allows the program to detect and
utilise your sound card correctly.

The BLASTER environment variables are normally specified in you AUTOEXEC.BAT
file (which is located in the root directory of the hard disk used for
booting your computer). This environment is set up by an instruction of
the following form:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5
^ ^ ^ ^
| | | |
| | | --- 16bit channel DMA, possibilities: 5,6 or 7
| | |
| | --- 8bit channel DMA, possibilities: 0,1 or 3
| |
| --- interrupt number, possibilities: 2,5 or 7
|
--- I/O base address, possibilities: currently 220 or 240

This instruction may also be entered (and executed) directly at the DOS
prompt. It is important that the line is entered correctly and that the
values match the configuration of your sound card.

If your sound card is not a SoundBlaster, but is SoundBlaster compatible,
make certain that it is set in SoundBlaster mode before starting the game.

If your card is 100% soundBlaster compatible but is not properly detected by
the program, try SOUNDBLASTER PRO option during the installation procedure.

Please note that if you selected a different sound card to that autodetected
by the installation program, the installation program or the game may crash.
If this happens, reset your machine and restart the installation procedure,
but selecting a different sound card or no sound.

then you have a different version then me because my version has a windows installer.

maybe these 2 quotes help

Install does not work (crash on start). The game can be played in DOSBox, but must be installed outside of it in DOS. Deleting of did.cfg before first run in DOSBox may be needed in order to get correct sound detection.

An info from VOGONS forum (ripsaw8080): The in-game sound (I used SB16) is strangely garbled under dynamic core and max cycles; fixed cycles of 15000 was fine, though. Normal core and max cycles also worked OK, sound is smooth.
