orcishgamer: If you think they'd never go that far, turn off adblock or recall all the punch the monkey ads we've had.
I have no idea what you're suggesting here.
Also - I haven't extensively used AdBlock in years, the only thing I'm blocking right now are YouTube commercials...
orcishgamer: They also require them to know tons of information about you.
So be it. GOG also knows a bit about you and uses it to create the "since you liked X, maybe you'd like to try Y ^^ ?" recommendations. Are there really ANY things about me that would make me EXTREMELY upset if even THE WHOLE WORLD knew ? I don't think so.
I don't want pointless spam, ads annoy me only when they're way too aggressive... I'm all for information being "automagically" made to suit my preferences.
It's like when I go to my favorite diner and the waitress already knows which salads I don't like and that I'll have a Cola on top of the dish-of-the-day with a students' discount. See ? I just disclosed some of this information not only to you, but to anyone who cares enough to read it - SO WHAT ?
I think it's the opposite. I'd say that the circulation of ALL KINDS of information ENSURES our safety. You can't just repress people away, as long as the info can get into the Internet, because there is going to be a backlash.
You're not safe when no one knows nor cares about your fate. You're safe when you can be heard and there are people who will listen and care.
I know this might seem slightly offtopic, but I think it may show you a different way to look at such things.
