You know what I think the worst bit about this is? That people will look at this $2,200 cable and say "Wow, that's way too expensive" and then look at the $70 one and go "Wow, what a deal!"

I've seen this before and for most people it would be fine, I'm not completely sold if I put my audiophile head on though because it's wrong to assume cat 5 is actually good cable just because data appears to arrive intact, it doesn't, TCP/IP has inbuild error checking to counter this. Obviously for analogue there is no second chance if it becomes corrupted, it stays that way and your music sound crap. I'm no sound engineer though so I happy to be corrected on this :)

The error checking in tcpip is really mostly for routing & collision detection, point to point networking never uses either, none of it is hardware related.

More than likely HDMI uses something similar but I've not had reason to research it because my $12 cheapo HDMI cables have been perfect. Apparently I was lucky when the comma in $12,000 was mistaken for a decimal point...

I didn't say it was hardware related obviously the hardware is only an intermediary.

In a TCP/IP header it has destination address so the router can do the urm routing. Collision detection is done by the simple means of stopping one medium from broadcasting for a random amount of time to let the other finish. The CRC check in the header doesn't relate to those things.

The point I was trying to make was that the medium doesn't provide the benefits of whatever protocols can be used on it (much like a road doesn't let a mini perform like a lamborghini) so people wanting to use Cat6 hoping to get the benefits from networking protocols are a bit thick

Trick question, right? Isn't all laser Lasic cheaper than that?
