It will be P2W If you want to be anything more than a pawn then it's time to open your wallet.

Purists are already complaining about the hats and tattoos ruining the game.

Siannah: ... by adding achievements for Minesweeper. And Solitaire. And Majong.

Instant commercial success. I fully expect a press release form Microsoft claiming "pre-orders going through the roof" before weekend.
Lol. This should be a huge hit for the achievement crowd. I don't care what they add, i won't be upgrading (downgrading?) anytime soon.

Elmofongo: I think tablets should not even exist they never even fufilled the need that Desktop, Laptops, and to lesser extent smartphones already fufilled
avatar
Gazoinks: They're not really meant to fill the same niche. It's more of a middleground between a smartphone and laptop, if you want something that can do smartphone-y stuff but is a bit meatier than a smartphone.
Or if you want something that can do things a computer can, but can actually be used on the go (you can't move and use a laptop at the same time).

Or want to replace the planner + notebook + laptop with one thing that's lighter, smaller and cooler.

Just because you don't personally use a tablet doesn't mean there aren't many useful things tablets are better at. A computer's form factor is a matter of personal preference. I think laptops are the stupidest PC form, but a lot of people like them.

FraterPerdurabo: What was your gripe with Windows 7?
avatar
StingingVelvet: I don't have one... ?
I think that's exactly why 8 has had such a radical change to the UI. 7 is a good, stable OS and there isn't an incentive for the consumer to get a newer version. This is in stark contrast to the Vista -> 7 transition that for most users couldn't come fast enough. Vista had the right idea, but 7 is the release it probably should have been. In a way, Microsoft is a victim of its own success and it needs a radical change to motivate users to buy again.

Gersen: the issue is when you create a new interface thought for tablet and phones, made to be used with a touch screen and as such used with a single "mouse-button" and try to artificially force it unto desktop (just because that's what Apple is doing) totally forgetting in the process that there a big different between a 4"-10" screen device with a touch screen and a 21" screen computer with a full keyboard and a mouse.
High resolutions are increasingly in the minority. Laptops, netbooks and tablets are dominating the market (whether we like it or not), sacrificing resolution for portability. Building their new interface around the new standard resolutions is the logical choice.

As for the interface, why should the majority of users endure the complexity of the traditional Windows interface for the sake of the power user minority? They have never used simultaneous multi-tasking or non-maximised windows, and needlessly complicated tasks like selecting multiple files are finally simplified. Windows finally has the simplicity of a device while still having the full power and complexity of a computer when needed.

For all the cries of anguish over Metro and claims that it ruins Windows forever it barely impacts my day-to-day use of the desktop environment. I get all the benefits of the new interface plus some great improvements on the desktop side.

The way I see it, Windows 8 is a win-win for everyone.

timppu: Actual installing it was about as easy as in XP I think, but after the installation I am not able to select the MT-32 driver from MIDI properties... because such option has been removed from Win7 settings. So I need to install something additional to fix that, like BASSMIDI.
You don't need to change the Windows default, just edit the DOSBox conf file to specify a particular MIDI device. This will also avoid changing the music in Windows games that were made with Microsoft's MIDI implementation in mind.

It's one thing to make a simple UI, it's another to make an obscure one. I never understood how hiding all the buttons and having the user guess what gesture he needs to do to use an operation is more intuitive than having clearly labeled buttons that tell you exactly what they do. Could anyone explain this to me?
