Instant commercial success. I fully expect a press release form Microsoft claiming "pre-orders going through the roof" before weekend.

Or want to replace the planner + notebook + laptop with one thing that's lighter, smaller and cooler.
Just because you don't personally use a tablet doesn't mean there aren't many useful things tablets are better at. A computer's form factor is a matter of personal preference. I think laptops are the stupidest PC form, but a lot of people like them.

I think that's exactly why 8 has had such a radical change to the UI. 7 is a good, stable OS and there isn't an incentive for the consumer to get a newer version. This is in stark contrast to the Vista -> 7 transition that for most users couldn't come fast enough. Vista had the right idea, but 7 is the release it probably should have been. In a way, Microsoft is a victim of its own success and it needs a radical change to motivate users to buy again.

As for the interface, why should the majority of users endure the complexity of the traditional Windows interface for the sake of the power user minority? They have never used simultaneous multi-tasking or non-maximised windows, and needlessly complicated tasks like selecting multiple files are finally simplified. Windows finally has the simplicity of a device while still having the full power and complexity of a computer when needed.
For all the cries of anguish over Metro and claims that it ruins Windows forever it barely impacts my day-to-day use of the desktop environment. I get all the benefits of the new interface plus some great improvements on the desktop side.
The way I see it, Windows 8 is a win-win for everyone.
