I hate them in most games. There are 3 form what i really hate:
1, Pay to win
2. Play 12782871 hours to unlock or pay for it.
3. The basic game is really limited and you need to pay for more contents.

I know two games, where it is working perfectly. In Dota and in CS:GO, where the items you can purchase are purely cosmetic.
And I spend money only in these games like dota and cs:go.

Micropayment is just a tool ... and so is biological weapons.

There are certain things that have no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
My opinion:

They're for MMOS and casual F***Bo** games, DLC in single player games also fall in this category for me and I hate it the most.

I really miss expansion packs, they provided massive new content at a fair price and then the game's developer would move on a different project. Now some companies, namely Firaxis, Ubi, EA and Creative Assembly milk their games for months after release with tons of DLC, I really really despise that.
I am against in-game micro transactions in games that you already paid for, and don't like games with dozens of useless add-ons. I don't want to play Barbie and dress up the characters in fancy clothes.
There have been a number of times in the last year that I ended up not purchasing a game on steam that looked interesting because the store page showed way too many DLC's. I don't mind large expansion pack style DLC's, but too many DLC's makes it look like you are buying an incomplete games, especially when they are released around the same time that the main game was.

Firaxis? Civ V was bad, yes, but XCOM only has one small story-based DLC, which is very cool, and then a proper expansion. Which brings me to the fact that there are still loads of games with big DLCs coming out, that you could call an expansion if you wish to do so - there were two for Civ5, two for Dishonored which is my favourite example, there's loads. Some of them are smaller, yes, but their price reflects that.
As with many things in gaming, it depends on the game. Very few things in gaming (and life) are completely black and white.

Yes sorry, I should have specified I was referring to Civ V. A few other games that come to mind is the new Tomb Raider and GRID 2, I was fine when it was few DLC per game but now it's just insane for some games.

Tomb Raider? There was one singleplayer DLC and it was completely non-consequential. I suppose there might be some MP ones that I just forgot about tho.

Edit: Oh, you're right, there's a bunch of skins and shit like that. Meh, I don't really care about that to be honest - I just ignore those and my life is better for it.

Yeah those ;)

It makes me feel as if my game is "incomplete" that's why I hate them so much.

Civ V, honestly, has put me off Firaxis games just about forever. I made the same mistake with Civ IV, but it cost a lot more and left me angrier this time out - I still don't have Brave New World, even at this late date. I'll buy other Firaxis games, surely, but only years after release when they are in a complete GOTY edition.

Speaking of which, Borderlands 2 drives me crazy. I'm playing the first one right now and haven't cracked the second, but in Borderlands 2 the GOTY edition doesn't include all of the DLC, and that's a bunch of crap. It's a great game, but that's incredibly rude - and there's isn't an upgrade to the GOTY, either.

I don't care about skins and such; the only DLC that interests me really is additional game content. I think skins and clothes and the like are a great way for the hardcore fans to support the game and let the rest of us play and move on.

Trust me, 99% of the time, that's not the case. It's just crap that the art department throws out after the development of the main game is finished. Most of the time, it doesn't even fit into the game properly or is unbalanced - it's not that your game would not be complete, it's more of your game being broken by added crap which does not belong there. It tends to be more of a problem than an addition, especially to a tightly balanced game like Tomb Raider (which is brilliant, by the way)

Indifference. I have yet to play a game and feel it was ruined by microtransactions, I just ignore them.
Absolute evil.
