ZPavelZ: Well all I know is there WERE plans for making a second movie. Perhaps, now they are no more. I do like very much the artistic part of Hero, though, and the way the story is told (several versions one after another).
What do you think about "House of flying daggers"?

wpegg: House of flying daggers took a couple of goes to get into, as it first appeared to be just cashing in on the success of Crouching Tiger, but I watched it again quite recently, and found there was actually a good story in there. I don't mind the wire-fu stuff like that occassionally, but I'm more a fan of wuxia and traditional martial arts films.
In fact for me it was the opposite. I kind of liked this movie first time more than I did the second time I think. Tiger/Dragon didn't really interest me that much, though, I did watch it through. Will think of something else, if I can.
After a couple of days this crossed my mind. Did you watch Kurosawa's "Seven samurai"? Yeah I know about "Magnificent seven" but after seeing this movie you will understand why the original is way better. It has got some fighting, but it is not so much "martial arts" as much as "tactics and strategy of a few against many". And what the samurai are doing there seems quite feasible to me.
Another film you might like might be Miyamoto Musashi. I "think" it's a trilogy - I have not seen it, but I have read the book by Kandzaburo Oue (I think this should be the way to pronounce his name in English) and it was very good with excellent storyline.
Iron Monkey with original soundtrack.
Drunken Master
Once Upon a Time in China
shadesofdeath320 said it, Riki Oh - The Story of Riki.

It does not get any more bloody or over the top than this.

This is a great thread! I'm a bit late to the party so my suggestions may not be Iron Monkey quality.

I didn't see Tony Jaa's "The Protector" of Ong Bak fame. I liked it better even.

There is an old artsy sudo martial artts movie The Bride with White hair.

Its not strictly a martial arts film so if you are looking for Iron Monkey or Tai Chi master/Twin Warriors, try something else.

Jet Li the Swordsman 2 is one I watched. I lost it in a move and remember being quite upset about it. Its been 12 years so I can't remember how it stacks up against other moves.

Jet Li has one called "My father is a hero" thats worth a watch.

Jet Li "Once upon a time in China" . The first I liked. The others were harder to get into. You have to like such things quite a bit to get through Once upon a time in China and America.

Donnie Yen and Michelle Yeoh are in "Wing Chun."

The movie is a bit whatever, but Jackie Chan has a great fight scene at the end of "Who am I?" There is also this fast little guy he fights in "Gorgeous." That scene is also worth watching even if you don't want to sit though the cheesy love story

Thats it for now.....for now.

Oh and I'm interested in Chocolate. Be curious to know if anyone has seen it.

...later

There is a good chance people will not agree with me on this one but I always like "Drive."

Its probably the best English fighting movie I've seen. Don't take the story any more seriously than you would any Chinese movie and you should be fine.

I'm starting to hate this tread already. I've lost half of the movies on my list.

Chocolate is OK, but nothing to write home about. There are some good action sequences, some quite comical, but it doesn't quite mesh. It's a bit like the next film she was in "Raging Pheonix", you finish the film feeling you've seen some scenes, rather than feeling you've seen a film

P.S I like Drive too.

I'll still likely check it out. My standards are fairly low. As long as there is some reasonable action I can usually overlook most anything else. Its nice when it all works but the genre isn't exactly well known for great character development, story telling, stunning visuals, or any other high mark of cinematic excellence. Then again I don't think I ever made it all the way through Iron Monkey 2.
