I have to say, they always leave a bad taste in my mouth. I think GOG should reward catalog completionists to a lesser extent, and not advertise the percentage THEY get as the eyegrabber. I know it's technically sound advertising, but it reminds me of "Starting at" and other cheap advertising gimmicks.

The recent Tex Murphy sale is a great example, I was thinking about getting a game or two, then noticed it was yet another "up to" sale. So, I passed.
I will pay up to the original price for the classics that are older than me regardless of a sale.
Man I hate that stuff.

Most of the time is, with most stores, they are like "hey we have a few dozen products at 20% off and one at 90%, so we named this sale as "up to 90% off"".

^ That's stupid.
I don't have a problem with it, simply because GOG seems to be pretty consistent about it so I know how the sale is going to work before I even click on it. And also, usually I prefer to just complete a collection because it's so cheap.

Then again, I guess that's the kind of thing I've been moving away from recently. Screw buying Steam games because they're cheap, and I guess screw buying GOGs because they're cheap too. At least GOGs support a cause I believe in when I buy them... that may help me justify completing a collection during a sale... but I really don't want any more extra games I'm never going to play.
I have no problem with it since they're always up front about the discounts.

Maybe they should start advertising free internet "shipping". ; )
I think it's the psychological factor. 60% is a great discount, and therefore easily noticed, which is why it's on the front page - to draw people to the sale. However, upon entering the sale page, the drop-off from 60% to 30% for a single game is significant enough to leave a bad taste in your mouth. Even though 30% is still a pretty good deal, it pales in comparison to 60%, and since your brain is anticipating 60% from the ad, that 30% suddenly becomes a lot less attractive.
I don't have a problem with it really, but there are many, many times I would have bit for 50% but said no to 30%, rational or not.

Welcome to the real world, where sellers try to sell you things. How shocking !
I suppose it really depends on the games, catalogue and what I want

Most of the time these promo's do not do much for me, usually it's "buy everything and get 50% off" for all games in a catalogue wheras most of the time I just do not want all games and I especially hate paying for something that I do not want

last week the Tex M. games were on sale, I wanted to try out all of the titles so I got them all for 60% off

For huge catalogs you really need a minimum of 70% off for the whole thing, anyone remember that ubisoft sale and how much the whole catalogue cost?
Yeah, as I've said before, this kind of tactic usually results in $0 passing from my wallet to them. GOG are pretty bad at sales these days.

Though it also doesn't help that there are so few new releases they have to repeat the same old sales over and over again because there's so little new to actually sell.
Personally, As soon as I see "Up to" I already know it is a typical 30% off sale and do not even go t the sale page at times.

I just wish I could trust that games will actually play on newer systems, which for me personally is a lot bigger issue than only 30% off.

Yeam, I am in the same boat. I have long ago given up on GOG as a source for games. Steam offers games from $0.75 cents, and the best GOG can do is $5 for obsolete games. Pass. I have every title GOG will ever have that I am interested in, since they only release old games. I guess some people are completionists, and will buy anything on here, but realistically, anyone with a life would still be playing the first 2-3 GOG's they bought now if they were actually buying games to play them.
For smaller packs like Tex Murphy I can understand it, but when they have entire publisher packs with dozens of titles in with the 'BUY ALL OF THEM FOR 60% OFF or individually for 30%' then if you took advantage of it you'd end up with a lot of bad titles or ones that you probably wouldn't play anyway. A couple of times I've gone in with an eye on a couple of titles that I'd probably buy at that price, then find out I'd have to buy them alongside several titles I have zero interest in, so no sale.
