Hey guys, I'm looking for some good PC Versions of Board Games (preferably with network support and free/open source.)

I have been to boardgamegeek, and seen their list, but was curious if someone/anyone has stumbled upon anything that is superb. I have found a few, and will list them below (not all have network support.) I will also add to the list if presented with games I find up to the quality of those below.

Domination (Risk)
HeroQuest (HeroQuest)
JCloister Zone (Carcassonne + Expansions)
JSanJuan (San Juan)
Sea3D (Settlers of Catan)
TripleA (Axis & Allies)

TCG/CCG:
LackeyCCG Collectable Card Game Engine, has several plugins for various card games.

Web-Based/Browser Games:
Brettspielwelt (Multiple Board Games)
Days of Wonder (Multiple Board Games)
Invade Earth (Risk 2210 / Risk: Godstorm) - Online/Browser-Based, Java
Yucata (Multiple Board Games

Hey bro this will be right up your alley if you fancy Car Wars:

Darkwind: War on Wheels

Let me know if you're playing. I'd be happy to take you on a scout.

Also check out these Geeklists:

Also, VASSAL is cool if you can take time to learn how to use it.

Lots of online boardgames are accessible through the German site Brettspielwelt (the link will take you to their English site). There's a huge community around the games and it's usually easy to find people to play with. People mostly speak German, but there should be enough English-speaking users around to help you out.
Carcassonne

Why isn't this available on GOG ?

Not really familiar with that first game, and I have seen the second list, but I will run through the first one as well.

Also, I'm still trying to figure out Vassal, some modules work well, where as others look and work like crap.

I am familiar with that, but am kind of looking for downloadables to play with members of the family that are abroad. Does that site support private servers and the like?

You can set your game to "invisible" before joining (click "Enter Room" instead of "Initiate Game" and then choose "invisible" in the options menu). That way it won't appear on the boards, there will be no call for others to join you and you'll have privacy when chatting. Your family members can find you by typing "/ghook [YourUserName]" (e.g. "/ghook jlg6182").

Btw, you can download a client if you prefer that to playing within your browser, but you don't need it, and you don't need an account, you can always login as an unregistered guest just by typing in a random name that's not used yet. And some games are hidden in the archive (e.g. Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers"), you can access them by typing "/manager archiv".

Cool, I will definitely look into it then. Does their version of Settlers have just the base game, or does it have expansions as well?

I haven't played Settlers for a decade or so, but they usually have games' expansions as well. I can guarantee it for Carcassonne and Dominion. :)

Alright, I will try to figure that part and how the site works later. It is currently erroring out in both my browsers.

Too bad. :(

I have this issue with it that for some reason it takes several minutes for me to log in. I used to think the application crashed or something because it was stalled but it actually works perfectly after waiting for 5-10 minutes. My friend doesn't have that problem on his rig, so I thought most other people should be fine. It really sucks but now that I know it I've learned to live with it, I just log in 10 minutes before we start a game and then do something else in the meantime (surfing the web etc.).

Anyway, if you need any help trying to figure everything out (not sure how easy it is for non-native speakers of German), don't hesitate to ask here or PM me.

Thanks for the post carnival.

Also, added a freeware port of Carcassonne to the main post.
Dig up Boardgameonline.com, you'll need a party but that shouldn't be too hard to round up some strangers. Aside from that, when I was a kid I had Clue and Sorry! on cd, but Clue was buggy as hell last time I tried (I wound up in situations where I couldn't move anymore or the game crashing if it lasted more than 10 rounds. And then computers solving in 3.) Sorry had animations to it that were sometimes buggy but it worked for the most part. I can't imagine having much luck finding them physically anymore.

I'll take a look at that site as well.

I am kind of trying to stay away from the older PC gamers that were official releases, as they typically didn't have network support. Also, as you said, they are buggy as all hell.

Most of the games I've found that work the best are the open-source clones I have listed in the original post.
