Wishbone: I'd recommend UT2004. Short independent matches, several different gametypes, tons of customization options and a metric fuckton of mods, mutators, maps, models and probably other things starting with M.

I used to play UT2004 but no longer have the discs. I see UT3 on Amazon for $8 - wonder if its worth it

Once you have it fully patched up UT3 is a worthy addition to the series. Personally I prefer the pace of play to UT2004. It's closer to the original in that regard. Only without sacrificing the arena sizes. But it's missing nearly all the classic maps.
I agree with Navagon but one plus factor . . . it's DRM free on GOG . . . not sure what a disk will install . . .=)

I do like UT3, but as Navagon says, it needs to be fully patched. There are also some nice mods out for it by now, though not nearly as many as for UT2004. I still prefer UT2004, but I play UT3 quite a bit. I'd say it's definitely worth the $8, so go for it.

I think you misunderstood him. Navagon was talking about UT3, which is not on GOG. Not yet, at least.

Might be soon. Given that '07 games are making their way here now.

Sorry . . . you're right . . . my bad . . . thinking of some bad DRM I installed off of an Amazon disk rattled me . . . =)
AND trying to play PK (thanks to this thread) at the same time !

I know its not an arena shooter, but Crysis is an awesome game to sit down and relieve stress. The big, open-ended battles are tons of fun, the gameplay is very addictive (but not too addictive), and by the end of the game you'll be so badass that you'll be convinced that you are truly a god among super-soldiers.
For quick pick up and play killing try Crimsonland, you hop in and hop out in no time. Postal 2 is perfect for that I heard too.

Postal 2 is great for pick up and play, because you play it obsessively for a few hours, put it down and never touch it again.

leomund: So my wife and I had a baby a few months ago, and as much as I love gaming, I am finding it impossible to get more than a half hour block of time. It makes it tough to really get into games with lots of quests, dialogue since you pretty much forget what was going on and lose the "immersion". I think what I need is something like UT2004 (maybe I'll even get it again since I lost my play discs) which I used to just play against the bots for a quick reality escape. My dream game would be some kind of an arena where you might be able to add on equipment / abilities as you won duels that don't take too long. I never followed shooter games too much being more of a TBS guy so maybe I missed something - is there anything out there like that? thanks

Id recommend team fortress 2 but its not easy to put down its so damn good.

I second that. Even though it's definitely not an FPS, it's tons of fun...
World of Warcraft. Oh, wait...
I suppose Batman's a good choice, Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer because the rounds are so short, and that's about it.

Try Puzzle Quest. There is a quest line, but it's very easy to pick back up where you left off, with handy pointers on the map that say "go here next." Plus, there's the Quick Match option, which basically is "fight random opponent from list of those you've already faced."
Short matches? Check.
Add/change equipment between battles? Check.
Turn-based? Check. (You did say you're a TBS fan, and not heavy on shooters.)
No XP/gold loss penalties for dying, so if you have to quit in the middle of a match it's no big thing.
Plus you can pick up a hard copy from Amazon for about $8. Probably less on Steam or D2D.

I initally read the title as "My new dad" and I just thought "wtf".
Shadowgrounds series or any of the 'Shooter' series (Alien, zombie, etc...).
Oh, and CONGRATULATIONS!!
