Freespace 2 is one of the best games ever made. Don't really know about the other games mentioned; I don't have a lot of experience with the genre.

I will add another voice for the X series games as they are easily my long-term favourite games on the PC. However, if landing on planets is your thing then I can also recommend Evochron Mercenary. The flying mechanics are a bit more involved than in the X series games, but the game is very open and freeform. It also looks great considering it is from an indie developer.

I will add my voice for Space Rangers 2 because while it's not a space sim, it's a fun space-related game in its own right. I would play that while waiting for that space-sim you are looking for, OP,

Thanks Guys! I love both simulators and space shooters so you guys have given me a lot of choices! These look great and that youtube video that TheJoe posted is pretty incredible.

Woot! This was so awesome, I actually watched it all, couldn't tear my eyes away...WIth a game this amazing, I could just fly around that planet for days, and not even care when the next combat was going to be...Thanks for sharing it TheJoe. :D

Actually, I love the piloting part as a huge Flight Simulator fan. I mostly like games with the "in cockpit" view too. I'll check this one out as well!
