Hi,

I'm looking for a certain game that I used to play at the Arcades during the early/mid nineties. Unfortunately, I don't remember much about it.

- It was a fighting game like Street Fighter 2.
- The art style resembles the one from the King of Fighters series. For all I know, the game might actually be part of that series.
- The first boss fight was against a small, fat dude wearing a turban who could breath fire. His stage was set in a desert.
- One of the fighters was a guy with blond hair (?) wearing blue jeans, who apparently was supposed to be some kind of womanizer. His victory celebration involved a red rose he used to sniff or something.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Was it more of a one-on-one fighting game like Street Fighter & Mortal Kombat, or a game where you fight a few enemies at a time before the boss comes out like Renegade & Double Dragon?

Also, was it single player or could a 2nd player join in & help?

The fire-breathing guy in a turban sounds a little familiar.

[EDIT] Was it Arabian Fight?

I'm thinking it's Karnov's Revenge, the game you described sounds a lot like it. Karnov doesn't wear a turban (and he didn't in Bad Dudes or Karnov, either), but there's a guy with a rose, just like you described. Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is what you're talking about. It's not the best fighting game ever made, but it's got Karnov in it. :P

Here is the character select screen.
Sounds like an SNK game. Could be World Heroes, Art of Fighting or Fatal Fury or all the numerous sequels and spin offs.

I have to say, I find it very unlikely that any of those three series are it. I have played all of the World Heroes, Art of Fighting, and Fatal Fury games heavily. I'm a bit of an SNK buff. Not rich enough to bother with a Neo Geo, but I've played a ton of their stuff, I've got a bunch of their PS2 collections, and I have just about all of the NGPC games they ever released in the west, and a few Japanese ones too. :P

So yeah. Pretty sure it's not any of those three. You can definitely rule out King of Fighters, Last Blade, and any of the Capcom crossovers as well. Especially since most of those came out much later than the mid-90's. Earthquake in Samurai Shodown is fat and can breathe fire, but I really don't think this is it.

Cool, you got me on the right track. The game I was looking for is called Fighter's History, to which Karnov's Revenge is the sequel.

Thanks to all who answered! Much appreciated.

(Apparently Karnov was indeed wearing a turban during Fighter's History, but not during the follow-up. Maybe someone stole it after the first game and that's why he is out for Revenge in the sequel...)

Ah, I never played Fighter's History much. That one was a bit more popular, it's the one that landed Data East in hot water. Forgot about that game, to be honest. I tend to get the two confused on the few occasions anybody actually bothers to talk about them.

I don't believe Karnov was playable in Fighter's History, so I suppose that's why I don't remember him ever having worn a turban. That, or I subconsciously tried to purge that from my memory. I didn't like the way Karnov looked in either of the fighting games to begin with. I liked the artwork for the NES and Arcade Karnov a lot more. I should probably play Fighter's History again sometime, it's been too long I guess...

At any rate, yeah. You're going to want to emulate those ones. Data East has had problems with the rights to Karnov, so aside from Bad Dudes they don't seem to be able to release anything with the character in it, such as in the fairly recent Data East collection on the Wii. I should know, I'm still upset about the games that didn't make the cut, but at least it has Magical Drop 3. :)
