I'm looking for a way to organize my photo's i have 40gigs around 10k and just having 130 folders is getting pretty intense and its taking nearly 2 minutes to load some folders while windows generates the thumbs and sorts by date.

Lightroom looks amazing but its running $300 that's a little steep for me. Any other programs that can help organize quickly and easily?

I used to use PHOA which is free: http://www.dk-soft.org/products/phoa/

Alternately, ACDSEE might have something that's affordable, but I haven't checked their prices for a while.

Adobe also released a product called Photoshop Elements, which includes almost all of the photo archiving and editing tools you'd need on a regular basis, as well as some fancier stuff (like XMP sidecars). In the US it'll set you back between $80 and $100 (though you might get it even cheaper at Costco).

Google's Picasa and Microsoft's Windows Live Photo Gallery are similar products that are available for free, and support basic tagging and albums. They're easier to use than Photoshop Elements, but in my opinion not quite as functional or elegant.

Personally, I use imatch found at photools.com right now it would set you back $65 and for the number of photos you're dealing with, you're probably going to want something heavy weight. It's well worth the money.
another option, opensource, under linux...

Irfanview is free and offers lots of features. Might be what you are looking for . . . =)
IMatch looks interesting and it comes with an Eval, Picasa also looks like it might work, and im going to give Elements a shot... and PHoA has the sorting features im looking for most, I have alot of trials to do...

These are great suggestions thank you!

From what you stated, I imagined that you'd probably be looking for something heavy duty. I've looked around for a freeware utility that allows tagging of images, and have yet to find any.
