I have no idea how this is going to look as far as 3D is concerned, but these graphics seem amazing on a hand held.

I have a DS, and I don't recall any game I have having graphics as complex as this. Closest thing I've seen was what looked like an old-school traditional animation cutscene in Dragon Quest IX.
I´ve seen photos of the new Mario Kart and it doesn´t impress me much
These are just cutscene images, and Resident Evil is known for doing some fancy cutscenes.
The real gameplay probably won't look as good as that.

Well, for one thing, the top row is scaled up to twice the resolution they actually are, so with interpolation they probably look a bit better than they would otherwise. As for the others, well I agree with you, it does look significantly better than anything else I've seen on the DS. Of course, we don't know whether they are cutscene shots or in-game ones, but I assume that at least some of them are in-game shots. At any rate, it does look impressive.
It does seem to be massively powerful compared to the DS. As far as I know it is a new system rather than a further revision of the DS (lite, i, XL).

No, some of that is gameplay. I've seen videos of some Japanese journalists trying it out.

Please bear in mind that the picture looks blurry because the 2D camera is seeing both of the images (the ones for the left and right eyes).

But then, when was any Mario Kart game particularly impressive looking for the system it was on? ;P

Oh wow, that gameplay footage is great, slightly blurry or not. I really should have held off on getting a DS until this one came out. Might gift the XL to a relative and get the 3DS when I can afford it.
An article on digitalfoundry detail the game and the demo of it, and yes, it is this impressive looking .

The 3DS gpu in essence a faster clocked gamecube GPU, with with all the modern day stuff, like self shadowing, etc.
Looks amazing. Can't wait to get one.
