jamyskis: I still use Ubuntu, but I can understand that people have been rather pissed off with their obsession with changing everything every five minutes. They recently put in a new app management system called Unity in an attempt to combine a Mac and Win7 style, and it is just dreadful.
The better alternative is Mint. I'll probably switch to Mint on my next upgrade, I'm just too lazy to do it at the moment.
IronStar: Am I the only person in the universe that likes Unity? Also those lenses that came in last version are awesome IMO.
I'll let you know when I get around to using Unity once my current LTS expires.
I like having a widely supported popular distro that comes in several flavors (for me, desktop and server version plus it's nice to see that they have Kubuntu and Xubuntu if you want to use a different GUI) so unless the GUI drives me bunkers even after a week of usage and I'm at an impasse to change it, I'll stick with it.
I've invested time reading distro specific literature and I have other cats to whip than to re-learn it for another distro.
I think in the end, Linux distros (amongst the more popular ones) make less of a difference than some Linux pundits claim.
Pick one, learn it and get some work done.
Any of the more popular well supported, frequently upgraded non-beta distro is a safe choice.
