Some say float. Some say levitation. One guy calls it quantum for some reason.
I prefer "flux pinning."

Although I don't really understand the science of this (invoking that sense of childish curiosity in me that I haven't felt in a good decade and a half), this is truly astounding stuff.
The ramifications and possible applications are incredible. Travel, for one - movement on maglev tracks such as these would require a great deal less energy than conventional floor movement because they don't have surface friction to contend with (there is the issue of air resistance, but what the hell) If that film were a safety vid on how safe these hoverboards could be, I don't see the idea lasting long.

It was actually only banned in Cyrodiil. To be fair, giant levitating air ships and flying horses were becoming a nuisance. That is, until someone permanently levitated his house a few centimeters from ground, to avoid paying property taxes ("well, there ain't no house on my land"). Then that shit crossed the line. Fireballing your neighbors, OK, avoiding taxes, FU.

I hate to break it to you, but we're probably at least 20 years out from being able to use that technology like that, if it ever does come to fruition.

Make that 200 years. Maybe it would be possible in 50 years in very well developed places like Japan, Singapore, or maybe some places in the US, but in other places, particularly Eastern Europe, not a chance.

Hoverboards were supposed to be joke in back to the future 2. Matel still has three years to build first one.

We already have maglev, however, it just does not do the flux pinning that causes this effect.
