I do try to purchase as many as i can because im a collector, so for me a pirated copy has 0 value. I got System Shock 2 and Bioforge from ebay, at 70 dollars each, both complete with box and manuals. Like i said, im a collector, so im willing to pay an extra ammount to get a physical complete copy. But thats me.

If you want to buy a copy, then ebay and Amazon are the only places you will ever find these old games. But if you dont care, then just get into an abandonware site and get it. Personally, i wouldnt feel bad for it, since no one sells these games anymore except for a few ebay sellers asking an absurd price.

If you dont want to pay a high price for these old games, just download them somewhere. Yeah, technically its still piracy, but i wouldnt feel guilty for it. Im totally against piracy for games easily available anywhere, and there is no excuse (in my opinion) for that. But for the called "abandonware" titles, things arent so black and white.

lugum: funny thing i saw a few weeks ago, an usb floppy drive 3,5 . for those who don't have floppy drives anymore in their pc and still want to use them.
Ha, I actually still have a 3 1/2 floppy drive in my computer. I still got the piece even though floppies were pretty much dead by then anyway ('04).

Stevedog13: Maybe GOG should implement a function on their games wishlist so that every time someone votes for a game it sends an email to the rights holder asking for the game on behalf of the GOG member. Some of those companies might give in just to stop getting all those emails.
avatar
xy2345: That would be mail bombing and GOG could probably be punished for that.
Yeah, for it to work every person who votes would have to send their own.

Doubtful, Blue Frog used to do that against spammers, it was one mail per title the first round then one email per copy after that. It's definitely not illegal as political action non-profits do that all the time in the US and I doubt there's a special loophole for them.

johnki: There have been quite a few games I've been looking for that are older, but aren't on GOG, aren't on Steam, aren't on Gamersgate, aren't on DotEmu, aren't currently being retailed, and have extremely high ($50 used at the lowest in some cases) prices on Amazon and Ebay.

I mean, I know a few of them are "technically abandonware", but seeing as I don't fully understand the extent of the laws surrounding abandonware, and that a lot of older games relied heavily on materials that probably aren't provided with abandonware (the manual, for one), I was wondering how everyone else goes about finding them, or if in some cases, they just pay the $50+ for them.

Examples of games I've been looking for include: Wasteland and Fountain of Dreams, Visions of Aftermath, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, Ascendancy (I don't have an iOS device), The Tone Rebellion, The Colony, Autoduel, and Zombi. There are probably a lot more, but that's all I can remember off the top of my head.

Thanks in advance.
Is Wasteland worth playing, now that you can play Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas?

Wasteland is a lot quirkier. I haven't actually played it (hadn't wanted to download abandonware, after all), but I heard something about bunnies that throw radioactive carrots at you or something.

By your logic, why would you play Fallout 1 or 2 if you can play 3 and New Vegas?

That isn't my logic. Just wanted to know if Wasteland was just Fallout 1 with bad graphics but now I know Wasteland is something different. Now I wish I could get my hands on it(Wasteland).

Ah, I must have misunderstood, sorry. :)

But yeah, I've read Wasteland is much funnier in a lot of senses. Here's hoping the sequel keeps that one up.

Personally I get lots of older games from op shops, garage/carboot sales etc etc ... I got a factory sealed box of Tex Murpher The Pandora Directive for $2 a few months back, star wars x wing/ tie fighter and x wing vs tie fighter for $1 each a few weeks back and many other older games.... Just need some slight dedication :P

Wasteland is definitely worth playing if you don't mind the graphics.

I recently reloaded it and want to play through it before wasteland 2 comes out. Other than the concept of a post apocalyptic world, they are different.

In Wasteland you role-play multiple characters. Combat is turn based and the story is not related to Fallout. In Wasteland, you are part of a military group the Desert Rangers trying to help restore order.
It's probably been asked a bunch of times, but how is DotEmu as a service? I found a few games not on here I'd be interested in getting (including Cultures 3: Northland, which happens to currently be on sale right now) but I don't know how they are as a service, so I'm not entirely sure.

I haven't bought anything from them yet, but they seem to be reputable enough as an online shop. The after-market support seems to be pretty non-existent though. Just take a look at the forum. It's pretty dead over there.

I just noticed they got LBA1&2 now. So much for that GOG exclusive, eh? =P The site layout is still all sorts of ungainly. It also doesn't look like they've got much of anything new in the last few months. For a little while it did look like they wanted to compete with GOG, but at this rate they most certainly won't be able to keep up.

I never noticed LBA was supposed to be a gog exclusive? Anyway, exclusivity deals tends to be time limited, so in many cases it is just a matter of waiting a little bit. The LBA games are also on GamersGate (http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-LBA/little-big-adventure), and if you scroll down you will see that the publisher for this version is DotEmu.
