SimonG: Actually, Spec Ops is a brilliant example of how achievements are a great social feature. Because in this game it showed you what decisions players made. I could follow my friends how they played the game and what decisions they made through the achievement score and it was awesome.
Orcishgamer gets "A Line Crossed" and "The Road to Glory", yep, you learn a bit about yourself too.
Alright, I'm definitely interested. Going to see if I can find a deal on it and maybe pick it up in the near future.
I usually don't care if a single-player game has multiplayer also, as long as it doesn't affect the single-player part. I tend to stick to one multiplayer game at a time for years or more, not playing e.g. dozens of multiplayer games each year, like I may play single-player games. In that sense I treat multiplayer games a bit like heavy duty flight combat sims and such.

Unfortunately, e.g. Starcraft 2 does feel to me from a start as primarily a competitive online multiplayer game, with a single-player game tacked on. It somehow destroys the single-player immersion when the launch screen already is like some damn online Football Manager game, with player ladders, statistics and stuff.

It's on sale at Amazon.com right now for 25 USD.

Or, you can also get Bioshock 1+2 to go with Spec Ops for 20 USD.

I too am annoyed by most AAA games having some multiplayer component nowadays. SpecOps the Line is a great game. It's shocking to see just how far your character can fall into darkness. I haven't played the multiplayer and never will, the game's strength is its single player experience.

Multiplayer games I didn't mind and really enjoyed: Unreal Tournament/2003/2004/3, HALO Combat Evolved, Quake Arena, Call of Duty I, Left 4 Dead 1/2, Battlefield 1942/Vietnam/2, Once games started shoving XP and Achievments into everything I drew the line. There's a thing called "story" that a lot of AAA games severley lack now. I miss singleplayer...

Okay, I bit and decided to try to 'job' the system. Since I'm in Canada, I can't actually purchase from Amazon.com, but I've read a great number of posts saying how easy it is to do so: just use a fake address. So even though it's something I wouldn't normally do (I'm generally a pretty honest and rule-following kind of guy), I tried it. I got the following message when I hit the order button (afyer putting in all the credit card and address info):

Sorry, processing is taking longer than expected.
Please do not reorder this item.
Game and Software downloads go through extra verification that may take up to 4 hours.
This process is in place to prevent unauthorized orders on your account.

Anyone know if this is normal for a new account, or are they going to nuke this on me?

*edit* Never mind. Got it.

That happens to me too, if I had to guess less than 1 in 10 times. It just means something got "slow" on the back end I'm guessing (maybe their key generator or something, dunno really).

Anyway, it's nothing to worry about for even long established accounts, I always had my games within an hour.

StingingVelvet: Publishers are desperate to stop used sales and piracy and see multiplayer as key to that. Which is ridiculous.
Here where there is a 90% piracy rate on PC games, guess which ones constitute the other 10% being a day 1 buy.
5-6 hours!? I really wanted to get it, but maybe I'll rent it instead.
