my other half has put her laptop in to be repaired.

I thinkits just a loose connection, when she opens the POS sometimes the light doesnt come on making it near impossible to see. the shop has said that they will replace the "bulb" and sort the connection....

Im sorry correct me if im wrong if you are "fixing" the connection shouldnt you do that before replacing a bulb that may be fine????

They will fix the connection (or un-stick the switch) and then charge you for replacing the backlight.

thats what im thinking.

loose bit, 2 minute job.

heres a bill for replacing the bulb (which they didnt do)

If it were the bulb would it be an intermittent issue or just always in the "I cant see shit" mode?

It depends if it's a common occurrence.

That laptop may be known for having the bulb go out on it, so they check the most common issues first, knowing that the connection is a rare possibility. What they're saying is that they'll replace the bulb then if that doesn't work they'll start looking at the connections.
I would just buy a new cheap laptop for $300 USD and sell the old one for parts. Those shops charge too much money and they will probably mess something else up either accidentally or intentionally, who knows.

I dont know what model it is but they told her that they will replace the bulb and fix the connection, didnt sound like they were going to just test the connection and see if the bulb needs replaced

If a bulb replacement is much easier than getting to the connection I can see why they'd do that. Kind of like replacing the battery in your car before you start pulling out the alternator or starter.

The older I get, the more I find that this is the best option if it isn't covered by warranty and you don't know exactly what the problem is. :( Sad fact of laptops, but true none the less.

I had the same problem earlier this year.

The source of the problem is usually either the part that connects the lcd panel to the rest of the machine, called the inverter, or the bulb inside the lcd panel. It is very difficult to know which one it is before testing.

The inverter is less expensive, like 5-10$ and much easier to replace, whereas for the bulb I paid around 30$ (ordered online) and the manipulation requires more patience and preparation.

To answer your question, if they know what they are doing, they should test the inverter before changing the bulb.

If the backlight never comes on, it could be the bulb (or the circuity that powers it) has blown or the switching has broken. If it works sometimes, I'd say its more likely to be the switching that has broken.

Yeah, I'd say the mechanism for detecting when the lid is opened is defective/sticking.

Laptop Screens with Faint Images

Laptop screens are back lit to improve screen visibility. However, sometimes the back light does not work, making the screen extremely difficult to read. The problem might be as simple as one of the latches being stuck in the closed position. For instance, if the laptop is opened and the switch is stuck in the closed position, the computer is usually on, but the back light remains off. First, find the back light switch. These switches are usually very tiny and located near the laptop hinges. Try to open and close the laptop a few times, if this does not work, a gentle tap or using a small pin to try to gently un-stick the latch usually does the trick.
well i just spoke to her and she has decided just to pay the guy £45 to "replace" the bulb.

Sorry to waste your time folks as the info I have passed on has gone basically ignored

Not wasted at all. You learned something, other people who look at this topic may also learn something. It's all good :)
