Wow, another help thread from me. Anyways, my brother decided he wanted to play Knights of the Old Republic, so he installed it on my dad's computer. Everything seems to go fine, but at first when he started trying to make a character, the game would crash when he got to a certain portrait. After a bit, that stopped. But then he got to another part, just after starting the game where he fought two Sith Troopers, and the game crashes there.
We patched the game, update the drivers (though since it's my dad's computer I'm not quite certain what his graphics card is, I just know it's an Nvidia) and checked the Bioware forums for any help, and didn't find any. So my question is, can anybody help me? Has this happened to anybody else, and if so, how did you fix it?

What I know fo the computer is that it's a XP computer, uses an AMD (I think) dual core processor, and has plenty of RAM, though I am not sure of specifics. I'll try to get more detailed information when I wake up.

I nominate that for worthless post of the week.
Some people just seem to have crashing issues with this game, like with Bethesda's games.

Personally I have never had crashing issues with either. I might just be lucky, but I tend to think it's all rooted in driver conflicts and I keep a squeaky clean system.
I seem to recall having similar issues, I think it may be related to the dual core (if your pc does indeed have one). I cannot recall what I did to solve it, I may have simply gone and played kotor 2 instead. Sorry I cannot be of more help.

EDIT:a quick google suggests turning the kotor executables affinity to a single core through task manager may be the solution. Run up the game, open task manager, find the kotor executable (kotor.exe or whatever) right click, click set affinity, and deselect one of the cores. Of course, if it's not a dual core processor, then this is not the solution you are looking for.

This helped reduce the crashes for me, but I could never completely get rid of them. Was playable enough to finish the game though.

This seems to have helped. I got past the bit that was crashing, but later on it crashed. I'm hoping that was just a random crash and not like the previous crashes, but I guess we'll see. Thanks for your help.

once again guys, ignite the brain before speaking.
technical assistance threads about off-GOG games on the general discussion board is stupid.
try to understand that.

Says who? Since when? This is the general discussion board and has always been a place for GENERAL DISCUSSIONS. We talk about everything here from tech support of other games to games sales on other direct download services. Seriously engage your own brain and take a look at the forums before allowing yourself to look like a twat.

People aren't asking GOG workers to solve those issues, they are asking other forum users for help and being this is a general board, and that there's several other threads like this and GOG doesn't mind, I don't see why you should.
