spindown: The file contains the number "14".

Vitek: It's 14. GamersGate version comes as 1.6.4 and then the number is 12 and after installing 1.7 patch it becomes 14.
I use Win-7 Ultimate 64-bit. The game was installed on XP and just copied so I redownloaded it today to see if there is any difference but everything is the same.
Thank you both for replies - they made me sure it's something "shady" going here. I have some results of my own investigation and in a moment I'll compile them to more "understandable form" ( xD ) and post them here.

Awesome, thank you for your detective work, Lexor.
OK, here we go - some results of my investigation for today. First, take a look at attachment - I've entered all data you gave me to excel for "easy" compare.

Columns are: file directory, name, size for GOG old version / GOG version after patch (if was changed) / GamersGate / Steam and finally status of file. Files not visible here are more below in table and have "OK" status. Files on gray background are the only files patched by GOG (4 of them).

Status of file is based on three versions of file: old GOG, GG and Steam. If its OK - all sizes are the same, if its BD - some size is different, if its "-" - some files are missing.

Lets take a look at three files marked by OK at the bottom of the table - they were replaced by patch... but.... why? It's weird, that three perfectly the same size as in other KB's distributions files were patched by GOG.

Now - what are these files? What is inside of them?
- curver.txt - txt file, with a number inside. Steam, GG and GOG before patch have 14 inside. After GOG patch the number inside was changed to.. 5? uhm?
- loc_data.kfs - its zip file with a 4 intro speech files and 9 small images - what was changed with GOG patch? Before patch images has only English version, after patch there are here also German, Spanish and French images (3x7=21 total), no different versions for speeches.. again - uhm?
- loc_ses.kfs - another zip file - this time it contains some dialogues - to perfectly working English base of 538 files, 27 files (this time it seems at random(?)) were added in different languages... what?

Lets take a look now at files marked as BD:
- manual.pdf - can be little different, not really important file for game to work
- two ini files - they can be different for sure
- data.kfs - old GOG version its the same in size as GG version so its OK for me
- interface_textures.kfs - same as above, old GOG version its the same as GG version so its OK for me
- sounds.kfs - same as above, this time old GOG version is the same as Steam version, but still OK for me

What we are left with? KB.exe. I do not have any tools to decompile/check this file but why file similar in size to other versions (1X MB) before patch, suddenly becomes only 2MB after patch? hmm....

Rest of files, marked "missing", near the top of table - its hard to decide, some of them are probably specific for distributor... (what is paul.dll? :o) But at the moment I can not see any "so important" file - maybe except save_fixer.exe on Steam version. I will need some more time to check them. Also, file list of current "fresh" GOG download version could be nice to have and compare. :)

Hmm, very mysterious. I wonder why GOG won't just give us the latest version that 1C apparently sent them?

I have some tools to decompile EXEs. You might try IDA Pro. A limited freeware 5.0 version is available and I believe a freeware 4.9 is out there, too. I'm not sure if 4.9 has limitations or not, but I have used it.

Freeware 5.0: http://www.hex-rays.com/products/ida/support/download_freeware.shtml

I also have fill diff'ing tools, if necessary. I have both the old and new GOG versions.

I haven't got the game installed but I'm fairly sure that the EXE is packed which reduces filesize considerably
If it's packed then it's probably packed with UPX, run "upx -d kb.exe" to unpack and then check the filesize
Protection ID should be able to detect which packer was used

Lexor: what is paul.dll?
paul.dll is part of SecuROM PA (Product Activation), SecuROM v.7.37.0014 + SecuROM PA in this case

Well, I DO NOT know. :/

If you have full fresh new GOG install (not just patched) can you send me KB directory listing?

dir /oe /s > output.txt

:)

Thank you for info about paul.dll - it was probably one of files with highest doubts "what is it?".

Also - thanks to you I have final proof now: KB.exe was indeed packed with UPX (I've downloaded DOS / command line version and used it - after unpack 23821312 bytes) and you know what I discovered?

"V!TAL!TY" text string! :o

I've googled for "no CD patch" and found one produced by them - it has the same size (after GOG's KB.exe unpack). It has "a few" binary differences but still...

I think it is the final proof that GOG again used some third party exe instead of files made by 1C because I don't think 1C would send them cracked exe?

What do you think?

*sigh*
If only a part of that energy went into getting GOG to add at least one patch to effin' Incubation.

I did a fresh install of the game. The installer was downloaded from GOG.com on Nov 18, 2011.

Attached is a TXT file with a JPG extension.

Lexor:
So you're saying they are incompatible because GOG used a cracked version? Nice.

What energy? Mine? :D

Well, I like to seek the best options for the things I am interested in.

BTW: it surprised me and made me suspicious that GOG found an answer for my calling so fast when during promo of KB I said KB is buggy.... :P and before that I updated my topic for so long without any answer... :]
Perhaps now is the time to write to 1C and ask them to send the latest version of KB to GOG again? :P

No problem. Glad I could finally actually help out. :)

Forgot to ask: what is your Windows version?
