ecamber: Hi Adam, I had promised you I would try out this game when it was released but it somehow slipped my mind until now. Here's my feedback on the Windows demo (all criticism is intended as constructive, please don't take it the wrong way):
Thanks for the feedback. I take criticism constructively. I can weed out what's beneficial from what's not (and I'm speaking generally). So no worries. :)
ecamber: - Music is fantastic. Was that you who did it? Great stuff.
Yes, that's me. Thanks. :)
Most of the songs were from another game I did (Orb of Dilaaria). The menu music is a MIDI version of a simple improvised song I did about 13 years ago.
ecamber: - Not very friendly to those not familiar with this type of game, of which I am one: NO instructions or tutorial of any kind that I could find, not even in the readme. This is my biggest complaint, and probably why I didn't make it very far.
Yes, I had hoped to make it intuitive, but I realize that I fell very short in this area. If I make another update, I plan to improve this quite a bit.
ecamber: - I can't tell what some of the art is supposed to represent: what are the green orbs?
I think you're talking about my attempts at trees. :)
I had thought to make this look like a top-down board game with tiles. I made arrangements with Pierce Roth to do the character portraits and I did the rest of the graphics (with varied success).
ecamber: - Why do you package the whole jre with the windows version? Don't most have java installed? Turns a ~10 MB game into 120MB!
Simplicity of install.
Java isn't necessarily on all Windows machines. I like the idea of an installer containing everything needed to run the game. I don't have to worry about telling people they need to install Java, grab this version, don't uninstall Java if you still want to run the game, etc etc. Seems to eliminate a lot of headaches, aside from the increased download time.
I've also found it to be more reliable to include the JRE with the downloads in Desura and IndieCity for the same reasons. Desura does allow me to set up some external installers to run before running the game installer, but they never seemed to work just right.
I'll consider adding an installer, or at least a ZIP file, for those who know they have the right Java version installed, however, it doesn't add a whole lot to the download size.
ecamber: I'm sure if I was already a fan of the turn-based roguelike genre I would love this game. But it's not doing much to draw me in otherwise.
Thanks again for letting me know your thoughts. Much appreciated.
