tomimt: At best Daikatana was mediocre. It really died because of its own hype: people were expecting this ground breaking game, which turned out to be nothing like hyped. I think that was the first time, when people realised, that you should not take hype as a promise.

If GOG were to give it away free, I might try it, but I doubt I'd be willing to pay for the privilege.
IIRC it also had serious problems with bugs at launch. They were fixed, but between that and the hype it wasn't going to do well.

I did find the GBA version to be fun though.
Considering the game is bordering on unplayable I see no point in adding it to the GOG catalog.

I can forgive the dumb save system
I can forgive the crappy graphics
I can forgive the shitty level design
I can forgive the sluggish controls
I can forgive the unimaginative weapons

But the AI is just unforgivable...
Not only the enemies are beyond retarded your companions are nothing more then drolling, suicidal, moronic , mindless giant pain in the ass! O' and what happens when one of the fuckers dies? yep game over...
So what we got is an FPS with bad controls, boring weapons, shitty levels who looks like shit which forces you to babysit raving suicidal idiots!!!

So no it doesn't belong on GOG...

You can thank Romero's girlfriend for the crappy levels. He was sleeping with her so she went from some intern QA at some company to level designer. Oh yeah, she liked to play Quake, she totally knows how to do level design!

But she was hot, cant deny that. Big boobs can help to promote a game. : ) Last thing I knew she had her own podcast, anyone know of it?

Actually, she was about a 5/10, she's not ugly, but she's not gorgeous either. I've seen way hotter gamer girls, 100s at PAX this year alone. I suppose she was a bit of a novelty at the time, and had really big boobs, but really, it's sort of insulting to women that that's why she got the job and was so recognized.
I would buy it for the lolz :)

Only $5.99 though , non of your $9.99 muck around here :P

Although I did have to laugh when I typed John Romero's Girlfriend into Google it took me straight to the Wikipedia entry for Daikatana :D

I like the b-movie analogy. I agree.

But yeah, the game's riddled with bugs and compatibility problems. Even moreso than Blood 2. It would be nothing less than a small miracle if GOG can produce a reasonably stable version of the game that will work with modern systems.

GameRager: Bumping for hopes it comes here, hopefully with some more bug fixes.

People here who didn't like it yet wear their nostalgia goggles a bit too tightly on a bunch of other mediocre old titles seem a bit too hypocritical and biased to be asked on whether or not it belongs here. Heck, it's like a campy b-movie with all the campy dialogue and silly level props and environments. IF the AI problems and remaining bugs could be fixed the game would be perfect. Heck, generic weapons & levels and cheesy gameplay MAKE most cult classic games what they are.

But c'mon....to complain about an otherwise good cult classic of a game because it has sucky AI and a few bugs is silly at best and a poor move at worst.
Ya your right complaining about some mediocre game and it's sucky AI is silly...
Problem is Daikatana is far from "Mediocre" it's just BAD really really BAD.
The sidekick AI alone turned the game into an unplayable piece of shit -

And no thats not a weird glitch thats the freaking game...

So either GOG hires some AI programmers or we can let this thing die as it should.

Yep, that's Daikatana all right.
To it's credit, though, Daikatana is one of the greatest petting simulators of all time:

As one commenter put it best:
"This AI is very well programmed, it is showing a great deal of restraint in not killing you. It takes a genius like Romero to program a pacifism into an AI."
