It doesn't follow the books nearly as well as it could have, however it does a pretty good job of bringing Barsoom to life which is what I was hoping for:)

Well, I finally saw the movie just now. I happened to see it in a Redbox kiosk tonight, and my extreme curiosity made it an instant rental. Still haven't gotten around to reading 'A Princess of Mars' yet. Maybe that's a good thing though, since other than the rough setting I have had absolutely no preconceived notions about what I was about to watch.
...and I must say: I loved it! Seriously, it's been quite a while since I've thoroughly enjoyed a movie this much. Totally unrealistic for sure, but I just loved the whole fantastical setting. The mixture of fantasy and sci-fi worked really well for me, and they certainly did a commendable job of making this make-believe world feel like it could exist. The acting wasn't all too shabby either.
I really don't get why it received so much negativity from critics. I guess they're just a bunch of stick-in-the-muds who don't know how to just have a good time. No, it's not a masterpiece - not that I ever give a crap about awards or such - but I found it to be damn good entertainment. So good that I'll definitely be buying myself a copy on blu-ray soon.
Disney may yet still make its money back with JC's dvd/blu-ray distribution (probably Disney's quickest theater-to-disc movie release yet), but I doubt they'll make a follow-up seeing how it wasn't considered a hit. That's actually totally fine by me. As a one-off it does work remarkably well.
The main reason why I didn't go to see it in theaters was because the whole John Carter universe was a total unkown to me, and I'm willing to bet that may have been the case with a lot of other people, too. I remember seeing the first trailer(s), and wondering "who is John Carter and why should I care?" They definitely did not enough to sell me on it.
Anyway, I had a blast, and it certainly whetted my appetite to finally check out those books.
