So far this place is working fine with the extremely minimal moderation I have seen. It may be because I stay out of certain threads and therefore haven't seen the worst, or because we have a community that, taken broadly, seems a notch or two above the web norm.

And I've only been in one thread that had to be locked by the admins. That was informative as well, as I now know it's better to use the PM tool to send pictures of my junk.

Yes, it's entirely by accident. At least until I get caught enough where I have to engage a psychiatrist to confirm that it's an uncontrollable illness instead, for which I am seeking treatment. Then I can ride into office on the redemption ticket.

Check your PMs. ;)

LOL! The Sanity Clause ;-p

doady: It seems to me the problem in those examples is not moderation, the problem is the rules.
The kind of rules you'll find on most forums are open to a huge degree of interpretation and enforcement approaches. Something like "no personal attacks" can be interpreted and enforced in ways ranging to the GOG approach to moderation all the way to what the OP linked to. Pretty much regardless of what a forum's rules are the reality of the forum is going to come down to the kind of culture that exists among the forum operator and moderators.

PetrusOctavianus: Not that I have the need to spew profanities and racial slurs, but I found it rather offensive on the Bethesda forum when expressions like "cocking the crossbow" and "69 editions" get censored, and the mod nazis constantly interfering with "we are not allowed to discuss that", or "thread closed" just as it's getting interesting.
Heh, pretty much the reason why I stopped posting there. Even this thread would have been quickly locked there for being "cross-forum trolling" (I'm not joking).

Having read a number of the infraction reports, all I can say is that apparently this site employs moderators without actual lives...:-( On the upside, it is good that zombies can be gainfully employed in this tough economic climate!
Here is a handy little program to help determine the sanity of the mods.

public static void main (String args[0]){
boolean isModInsane = sane(arg[0]);

}

public static boolean sane(boolean common_sense){
boolean isZeroTolerance = false;

if(common_sense){
isZeroTolerance = false;
}
else{
isZeroTolerance = true;
}

return isZeroTolerance;
}
