Our bulldog died a few days ago :(

Gerin: I'm sorry about the loss of your little ones.

Last weekend we almost lost our dog. He was a healthy and happy 2.5 year old rescue mutt, and he brought us (esp my wife) a lot of happiness too. Just last Thursday he stopped eating. All he did was drink water and then throw up. He stopped drinking water and stopped throwing up but the dehydration almost killed him. Four different vets were stumped as to the cause and said something must be blocking his GI tract. They gave him fluids and eventually he passed a little box of candy that my wife's brother's kids had left on the floor. Long story short, he's fine now. Thank God. My wife was out of her mind with fear.

Wishing you comfort and healing...
We had this happen about 3 months ago with our 2yr old Vizsla. She ate something at the doggie daycare we take her to. The emergency vet bill was over $6,000 to have it removed...

She survived, though :) We also have pet insurance, now.

darthspudius: Yes we thought the same. they are going to the vets tonight just in case,

WildHobgoblin: Yes, that's probably the right call, just to be on the safe side. Hopefully all will be well, and it turned out to be just a coincidence, but then at least you can stop worrying...
Turns out they have a chest infection... that you only know about when one of them drops dead. Got medicine and they should be fine in no time if he gets through the night. I feel bad that I didn't even notice any problems. :|

Naw, you really shouldn't feel bad, birds are among the most difficult patients, exactly because they often show symptoms only when they're already standing with one foot in the grave :( If there's no change to feathers, beak or eyes often the only thing you have to go on is food/water intake, and if you have several birds even that is difficult to monitor...
I'm really glad you went to the vet though, holding my thumbs for them! And I do hope your son isn't too upset, I guess the bad news must have sunk in by now?
I am so sorry for you loss. Losing a pet is like losing family.

We had a labrador retriever growing up named Turbo. He was this massive animal, but gentle as a kitten. He loved fishing, and would attack minnows that approached the shore. Fetch was also a fun game, and if the toy sank in the water (we lived near a lake) he would dive underwater for it. One day, he had a seizure. We took him in, found out he had mets everywhere, and we put him down that day. He is buried in the backyard and my parents grow sunflowers where he lays.

He didn't take it as bad as I thought. I think he's understanding that sadly these things happen. Still feel bad for the little one though. Poor thing is still looking lost without his brother.

Yeah, it's always difficult to compare animal emotion to human emotion, but I'm sure Frodo's little world got shaken up quite a bit... well, hopefully the two Bagginses will develop a stronger bond in the future, but surely being sick isn't helping either right now.
Glad your son didn't take it too hard, though, sadly most pets don' t live nearly as long as their owners, so having to say farewell at some point is an inevitable part of taking in an animal (not that knowing this makes it any easier when the time comes).
Hope you and the other budgie will be feeling better soon. I love budgies and used to have one as well.
