Psyringe: Path of Exile is what you're looking for.

It's a free-to-play evolution of the Diablo 2 formula with some interesting new ideas (flexibility of skills, innovative potion system, etc.). It's also by no means pay-to-win (like many other free games), it's financed through cosmetic microtransactions that don't give advantages in-game. Characters aren't limited either, you get 24 character slots. If you are playing through the entire game (all difficulties) with several characters, then you will eventually want to buy additional stash space, but by the time that becomes an issue, you'll have spent so much time with the game that you'll think it worth it.

hummer010: Interesting. It seem most times when I fire up steam, it tells me that you are playing Path of Exile. It must be good, and free to. I'm going to have to check it out.
It comes in bouts, and I'm often letting a game run in the background while I'm doing other things (or when I've fallen asleep ...). But yes, it's a pretty good game imho. :)

Zy-El by Kato. It adds new weapons, monsters (from D1 as well as new ones), crafting, newly redone spells so weak early ones actually mean something at higher levels, 10,000 Max level, 100 Max skills per skill (although internal limitations may make some of them not work beyond a certain point). Infinite storage via plug-y, collectables, posters (which give you bonuses for being in your inventory), recipes to socket almost any item, piggy banks, charms, gambling via poker system, miniaturize & restore formulas...

You're best to download the manual and read some of it yourself... :)

Chiming in to say Path of Exile IS really good. If you're looking for something with massive skill trees and crazy customization, PoE is probably your best bet.
