So... is it a bad thing that I've never actually seen that film nor ever had the drive to rent it? =P

Honestly, now is really the time to watch it, it's very much a movie that benefits from viewing it during an economic down turn.

Whether or not you'll like it is a matter of opinion, but the movie is a masterpiece and one of the few movies that I've managed to sit through without constantly squirming to do other things.

At it's heart it's an extremely simple idea about the things one regrets doing for success when one realizes that one has given up ones happiness.
Hmm... Citizen Kane... my opinion is "Many people have heard the name; not many have actually seen it." At least not these days. Pong?

Yes. Claiming to be interested and movies and not having seen Citizen Kane is like claiming to be interested in Drama but never seen or read a play by Shakespeare. You have zero credibility. Now to you don't have to like Citizen Kane, but you certainly should see it.
Thing is, so much of what Citizen Kane did first from a technical point of view has become such a standard technique of even a beginning film student that it sort of hard to realise how revolutionary Kane is.
But even taking away that, it is a wonderful movie. One of the best screenplays ever written.
Half Life is the correct answer. The Citizen Kane of gaming must be underappreciated. Those DnD games, System Shock, Deus Ex sold a ton.

I think that is an excellent description of why Citizen Kane is important. What is a PC game that you think had a similar effect on its own PC gaming industry.
As some people have already said - Sacrifice.

Didn't Half Life sell like 10 million copies or something?

You really enjoy making ridiculous posts, don't you?
Planescape Torment, no other game comes close for that role imo.
baldurs gate 1&2 of course.
Its really on a level of its own. There are games that do one or two things as well as BG... but there really arent any other games that do everything as well.
Hm, yeah, BG 1&2 are good choices. Though they're not my favorite cRPGs, they're probably the most polished and well-rounded.

Though if we're using this description, maybe one of the earlier FPSs like Doom or Quake? Not exactly artistic, but their influence is probably more felt nowadays than cRPGs.

Where exactly is the ridiculous element in the above post? Half Life is universally praised as a cornerstone in modern videogame storytelling, pacing, and structure. Sounds a lot like Citizen Kane to me.

i love planescape. But its got a weakness: the combat. Its glitchy and not very well balanced. Also, while it has fantastic social sidequests, its quite lacking in the "big awesome monster" sidequest deparment (like dragons).

The part where you said that Half-Life is under-appreciated.
