I am not worried about it draining battery life if that is how you are going to answer because it i plugged in to a wall socket. I just want to know if leaving it in sleep mode will do damage to my laptop.

No, I don't believe (nor have I read) that sleep mode will damage your laptop in any way. In fact, it's meant to be better for your battery, especially if your laptop is configured to go into sleep mode automatically when left idle
It's actually good in some ways theres less thermal shock from restarting, less shock from power on etc etc it can is some small ways extend the life of internal parts (kinda like how standby can extend the life of a TV)

but isnt it keeping on standby more fire hazardous though.

Maybe if you store it in a sealed bag with no way for the (small) amount of heat generated to escape.. for about a week... I've had laptops in sleepmode in a bag for 8 hours sure the bag was warm but noway was it near flashpoint. The only way you'd cause a fire is if the battery was broken and decided to explode (yes in every known case of a laptop catching fire its a battery short LIon batteries do not play nice with shorts)

i was more referring to tv's and other appliances. i dunno about laptops.
also depends on the room temperature, whether if its 10c or 40-50c might cause a difference.

0.5-2 watts isn't that much power your much more likely to start a fire with the spark caused by a hard switch than dissipating that small an amount of heat.
I've had my laptop for over a year, and I turn it off like once every two months.

I haven't had any problems with it.

As long as you're not obstructing the cooling vents, no.
Theoretically it's actually better to leave a computer running than constantly turning it on and off.
There is of course always the possibility your battery will explode :P
But barring that, no it's fine.
for sleep mode you mean sospension, right?

anyway,i want to ask the same question of OP but with the laptop plugged to the electric corrent and not just using batteries
i use the normal electricity and also have the batteries in the laptop

if it's going to be plugged in and kept in a bag (yeah right like thats gonna happen) take out the battery so that charging heat doesn't degrade it LiOn don't like heat. Otherwise exactly the same answer it actually has positive points to keep it in sleep mode.
