Because my collection of CDs is getting old – I decided to image them on 2 HDDs. One HDD is in my PC and second one is just for backup purpose not connected to the PC. My question is: is it necessary to connect this backup HDD from time to time to PC and give him a bit of exercise (like scan for errors, defragment etc) to keep it fit (like in a car – even if you don’t use it for a long time it’s good to start it now and then and let engine run) – or is it pointless?

As long as you store it properly in a dry and cool place then you're fine and don't need to start it again.
You won't need to de-fragment it (fragmentation only happens when you're writing to the drive) but you should check the integrity of your backups over time if they are actually important... so if you do come across damage on the backup, you can restore it from the original.
