It still continues to amaze me where all that hate for Oblivion and Fallout 3 is coming from. As much as one might dislike them for what ever reason, they where rightfully bestsellers every publisher (including Interplay) would love to have.
Fact is, Interplay managed for nearly 10 years to do absolutely nothing for the brand Fallout and had to sell their rights on it. At the point Bethesda picked it up, the brand was as dead and risky to make a follow-up, as classics like Thief / Dungeon Keeper / Deus Ex are. And they did pull it of - for better or worse may depend on your point of view - but there's no denying that they revitalised it successfully.
To the Bethesda-haters: you DO realize that if Bethesda wouldn't have picked up that license and releasing Fallout 3 as it was, there wouldn't be an Interplay around anymore?
And for the Interplay-will-smash-Bethfuckingesda crowd: you DO realize that Interplay managed for nearly 10 years to release nothing but hot air?

Oblivion gets a lot of deserved flack for being dumbed-down from Morrowind and Fallout 3 gets a lot of deserved flack for having a lot of poor writing, but the vile hatred spewed at them from old-school RPG gamers is indeed odd. I could see saying they're not for you, or bitching about the writing like I do, but talking about them like they killed your sister is really weird.
I've stopped trying to understand it.
Fallout 3 is what got me into Fallout. I was 3 when the first Fallout came out, so I obviously couldn't play it. I had never even heard about the Fallout series until Fallout 3 came along. I liked it, so I wanted to play the first two to understand the back-story. this in turn lead me to GOG. Love it or hate it, Fallout 3 introduced a lot of people to the fallout universe.
I'll bet even money that they end up developing nothing but mobile (cellular) games.
My hatred for Fallout 3 and Oblivion still is present to this day. lol. Just normal hate for the game and Bethesda. And also for Bethesda(and also Microsoft) who started the DLC revolution.

Much like the original 2, it was a true sequel

Ooooohhhh.... can't agree with that. Comparing the Master's dialogue to 3's robo-president's is like comparing a Michael Bay movie to The Catcher in the Rye if you ask me.
I thougth Fallout 3 was pretty good, but no in the same league as 1 and 2.
I can understadn being dissapointed, but the melodramatic rants by the Old Schoolers are silly.
My problem was with the writing, not with the First Person Point of view.
Please no!
Interplay is a merely a husk of its former self. It needs to be acquired by another company who actually knows what to do with Interplay's franchises.

Like who? I wouldn't trust any of the major/mainstream players as far as I could throw them and most indie studios don't have the financial capability nor the development resources to make use of the franchises. CDProject might qualify but they're not that good shape either and are busy with Witcher 2. And I don't think just selling the old games would bring enough profits to justify the cost of aquiring the franchises.

Bring in new goods, Interplay! Specially a real fallout mmo game.
I think what's missing from this discussion is something about the actual games that Interplay are going to publish. I think they look pretty neat. Lame names, sure, but I'm always up for a (good) 2D-platformer and some pinball fun.
I'd like to say "honestly, I couldn't care less about Interplay's past", but that's not really true. Nevertheless, there are a lot of devs out there who can't find publishers, and if today's version of Interplay can help some of them bring their games to the public, then I'm happy about that.

No such company exists. Whoever buys them up will just make use of the title and turn the IPs into some watered down FPS or aRPG.

Heh heh, yeah. People complained about the bugs, the almost monochromatic dreary graphics, the writing and the clunky combat (VATS) and then went on to claim that it wasn't a true Fallout game.
Oh the irony.
Fallout 3's biggest problem was that it was too much of a true Fallout game in all the wrong ways. Luckily it got more right than it did wrong and I invested over 100 hours in the game quite happily.

Let's just hope it doesn't turn out to be another Strategy First for them.
