It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

dksone: Their are lots of reason why sites my get down for some but not everyone.
The site may use different servers to serve different region, with the one assigned to you being down.
May be a DNS problem. That's the table which link a site url to its IP address. If your ISP DNS is out of date, the site will be unavailable to all that ISP customers for a few hours. Your computer also keeps a cache of it, which it should refresh every once in a while.
May be some peering problem, where the site ISP and your ISP stop talking to each other - although that usually affect a lot of sites.
May also be a bug in your browser. Or a virus in you computer.
And yes, it may also be [insert conspiracy theory here]
Thank you very much. I had just marked another answer as the right one but wish I could mark this one as well since it's gives a little more detail. I'm still fuzzy on how these reasons would affect only one site, but it sure as hell is better than the reasons flying around in my tin foil hat covered head.

OldFatGuy: Yes, it's working again now, but as I said above, I'm not sure I understand how it could be routing server problems and only have it affect one site. Yet every other site I tried loaded up fine and dandy. And I learned that others (from all around the world) accessed the site just fine during those hours I couldn't. I tried about every half hour from 10 AM to 4 PM with no luck until about 5:30 PM. (All times USA EDT)

Wurzelkraft: The specific routing server you were trying to connect to could have had an error or your provider could have caused an error. I've had both things happening to me before and it's especially aggrivating when the error is the provider's fault. -_-
Chance are this will happen more often in the near future.

Well, it turns out it was a conspiracy, of unknown origin.

The site is back and it turns out it wasn't just me not getting access, it was many, in fact most. And the explanation given was a series of DDoS attacks (whatever that means) and they said that it wasn't the first time the site has been attacked. So apparently, when a site is DDoS attacked, some people can still get through, but others can't. Because there were comments to threads during the day when I never, ever could get through. That's why I thought perhaps it was just me, since I was seeing that others were getting through and commenting.

I don't much like the site being unavailable since I comment and write articles there, but I suppose the fact that it's getting attacked means we're doing something right.

Thanks again for all the answers, I learned a few things here.

OldFatGuy: DDoS attacks (whatever that means)
Distributed Denial of Service.
Basic idea of Denial of Service attack is to send too many requests to the server, thus making the server unable to reply. Since servers usually have more resources available than the attacker, the attacker employs multiple machines to send requests, thus making the server unable to reply to all.

Think of it as the poor cashier who has 100 people in front of him demanding service. Sooner or later, the cashier will be unable to properly keep track of who he has to tend to, and quit.

For more info, Wikipedia.

P.S. There is also the Black Fax, which is an old school DoS attack, for those that wish to harass someone ;)

Thank you very much. Wish I had 1% of your brain.

I knew what DDoS was "conceptually" but was under the impression that the attacks "took down" servers due to the overwhelming requests. However, apparently that's a misunderstanding, as I said above, some people got through. So I guess I wasn't as sure of what DDoS was as I thought. Apparently instead of making a website go down, it instead makes it hard for people to access???? I dunno, I get the basic idea, but was unaware that some people could still access a site when under attack, and was unaware that such an attack could last so long (Again, I assumed such an attack lasted briefly, then took down the servers, and the servers being down was why a site was unavailable). But according to the site, they were under attack all day.

And on the same day the site lead off with the headline "Obama Sends More Troops to Iraq". Funny that.
