JMich: Distributed Denial of Service.
Basic idea of Denial of Service attack is to send too many requests to the server, thus making the server unable to reply. Since servers usually have more resources available than the attacker, the attacker employs multiple machines to send requests, thus making the server unable to reply to all.
Think of it as the poor cashier who has 100 people in front of him demanding service. Sooner or later, the cashier will be unable to properly keep track of who he has to tend to, and quit.

P.S. There is also the
Black Fax, which is an old school DoS attack, for those that wish to harass someone ;)
Thank you very much. Wish I had 1% of your brain.
I knew what DDoS was "conceptually" but was under the impression that the attacks "took down" servers due to the overwhelming requests. However, apparently that's a misunderstanding, as I said above, some people got through. So I guess I wasn't as sure of what DDoS was as I thought. Apparently instead of making a website go down, it instead makes it hard for people to access???? I dunno, I get the basic idea, but was unaware that some people could still access a site when under attack, and was unaware that such an attack could last so long (Again, I assumed such an attack lasted briefly, then took down the servers, and the servers being down was why a site was unavailable). But according to the site, they were under attack all day.
And on the same day the site lead off with the headline "Obama Sends More Troops to Iraq". Funny that.
