An epidemic of violence.

Outlast, a terrifying stealth-based survival horror game with parkour elements, full of sickening insanity and unscrupulous violence, is available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $7.99 for the next 24 hours!

In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now. Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

Outlast is a first-person perspective horror game, that has you fighting for survival (as in: hiding or running in panic) in a nightmarish mental asylum overrun by hellish maniacs possessed by unnatural bloodlust. Deep and immersive gameplay paired with excellent visuals and competent narrative will make you jump in your seat time after time. The game is full of ideas prominent to the horror genre and makes perfect use of each and every one of them. With a story and characters inspired by actual asylums and cases of criminal insanity, diverse hide or run gameplay with parkour elements, and many gruesome images that one can not simply forget, this title offers one of the most involving and terrifying experiences in the history of gaming. You have been warned.

This evening, you could be facing the greatest fears gaming has to offer, sitting in a dark room on the very edge of your chair, heart racing, with sweaty palms and dry lips, playing Outlast, for only $7.99 on GOG.com! The 60% discount offer lasts only until Thursday, January 30, at 10:59AM GMT.

Nice promo.
I guess this might be a good time to resurrect that review I wrote when this game first came out (and which was gobbled up by some website glitch). Unfortunately, it reads less like a review and more like a piece of copywriting, but rest assured I truly loved this game and meant every word of it!

"Horrific and highly recommended!

No messing around in this one, kids! Your trip to Mount Massive Asylum will literally have you knee-deep in the dead from the get-go. And compared to the grotesque horrors to come, that‘s pretty much the G-rated part of the game...
Red Barrels‘ creation needs to be applauded for its appalingness. Yes, there are cheap jump scares, but they‘re nowhere near as tiresome as, say, Doom 3. Instead, picture nerve-wracking, cold-sweat-inducing moments spent running and hiding from hideous cyborg-mutant-rapists (you read that right!). Nothing I‘ve played recently can quite compare with the adrenaline rush of outsmarting the asylum‘s terrifying inhabitants.
Even though the game takes place solely in the asylum, there's some variety to the locations and they never feel as nondescript and boring as you might fear. The brisk pace also makes sure that none of the locations ever overstay their welcome.
On the downside, the (sparse) readables are a bit lacking and the conclusion felt somewhat unsatisfying. Still, you‘re in for quite a ride. It‘s not the longest game in history. But believe me when I say that it‘s one of the most intense! The near complete lack of bonus content is regrettable, but being able to get this DRM-free makes up for that."

So yeah, needless to say I enjoyed the hell out of it. At first I was sceptical: I despise jump scares and highly scripted games. On the other hand, I enjoy the FPS and horror games. Since this is a FPS horror game (even though the only thing you get to shoot is a crappy home video that might eventually see some heavy circulation on liveleak) and it was created by a bunch of guys who turned their backs on their AAA-publisher-overlords to do their own thing (and who miraculously decided to offer their creation DRM-free), I decided to give this a chance. After having a couple of months to refine my opinion on this game, I‘d have to say that the first two thirds (of an approximately 6 hour experience - it‘s not the longest game in history, folks!) are utter brilliance. Once the supernatural element comes into play, „Outlast" goes downhill. It‘s still enjoyable, but it‘s nowhere near as thrilling as the earlier parts of the game. And the ending itself is... well, I found myself let down. As for the other complaints in this thread: Yes, it is highly scripted, but exploring the asylum doesn‘t feel like you‘re on rails. I‘m not a fan of scripted games, but this one I felt struck the right balance. I‘m also not a fan of checkpoint saves - which this game uses - but they‘re also done extremely well here. You‘ll never have to backtrack more than a few minutes and I‘m really happy that Red Barrels had the balls to use frequent checkpoints despite creating an already short game. With a game like this, I‘m sure the temptation might have been there to make checkpoints sparse to artificially stretch out the playing time.

It‘s also easily one of the most disgusting and violent games out there. That alone might entice some of you out there to buy it.

Upon reflection, I‘d still rate this game 5 bananas out of 5, bordering on 4 out of 5 due to the crap ending. But it‘s definitely worth the measly 8 bucks gog is currently asking for it.

tl,dr: Buy this game!

FYI: This game is horrifically AMAZING. Yes I cheated and watched Markipliers playthrough on YouTube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8ri1v8vTTM ) , but I also bought it and plan to play through it when my memory fogs away a bit.

It's worth it, trust me!
How short is the game?

an approximately 6 hour experience

This length might decrease by an hour or two on repeat playthroughs. But don't let that deter you. To be honest, the "Amnesia" games didn't take me much longer to complete.
Worth every penny.
There is no way I could have said no to this offer !! Thanks GOG !!
Now I'll have to lock myself in the office on the weekend as I have a shady os x system running at home ^^
Cheers
