Spiral Knights is a fun MMO, kid friendly with a cute art style that should appeal to youngsters, and it's F2P.
It plays like Zelda Four Swords Adventures, you crawl dungeons, fight bosses, craft better gear, and it has a bomberman-inspired PvP mode. The only thing that is bought with real money in the game is crystal energy which is used mainly for crafting. CE has a fixed price in dollars but it can also be bough with crowns (in-game currency you get from loot) but the price fluctuates by supply and demand.

TVs_Frank: LEGO Universe was sorta fun, but there really wasn't much to do.

And I didn't get to try the building aspect during the beta much since they wiped characters every week it felt like.
Building was quite nice (barring my lack of ideas), you could use both pre-built structures (like trees, tents, pieces of castle walls, ...) and single blocks to build pretty much whatever you want (well, duh, it's LEGO). The annoying thing for me was that all building lots beyond the first one required paying rent (from in-game currency), requiring the player to earn enough to keep the lots they had acquired - as well as the necessary expenses of repairing armour and whatnot (I no longer remember remember exactly what the common expenses were, so forgive me if "repairing armour" isn't applicable to the game).

orcishgamer: Okay, so my kid loves Wizard 101, which is "free to play" but not really, it's more like a demo version, at level 10 you run out of quests that don't require access to paid or subscribed areas, you can level pets for maybe 2 more days before the curve becomes so slow it's no fun. You have no access to ranked pvp matches or ranked pet competitions. The whole thing is full of velvet ropes and even if you sub there's still stuff that seems to be mainly available only via their in game currency which cannot be earned (except a very small amount worth maybe 1.25 USD for referring a friend).

I added it up and you can buy access to all areas (so PVE only, still no ranked pet races, etc.) for 60 bucks with their current sale (normally 80 bucks).

Or you can family sub for 6.95 per person.

All in all this shit leaves a bad taste in my mouth, good f2p games shouldn't have this many velvet ropes, it reminds me of the Maple Story horror stories I've heard.

So, this game is about wizards and you build a deck of cards and use them to cast spells in combat, it's very cutesy and has good kid appeal visually and story-wise.

Anyone have some other suggestions, I have some old beta Free Realms accounts and that's all I can think of for comparable games. She sometimes enjoys harder games it's just there's no respite in some of these and no ways like pet races to goof off (which is key for kids, in my experience, when they get frustrated with something hard).

Help please, so sick of this game, don't really want to pay them money for such a bad implementation of f2p...
While it's not F2P, i've heard good thing about the Lego-universe. It's probably the most kid friendly game out there. The good news is you won't see any player named Phucknut roaming around griefing new players.

I would second spiral knights aswell, the combat is fairly casual so theres no complicated menus or keybindings to worry about. The only problem i have is that if you are a F2P you can only play for about 1-2 hours tops per day due to the 'mist' cap which gets used up when going into dungeons and such, which can get annoying.

Also i don't know how you feel about runescape, but it's probably one of the better F2P models out there since you can reach level cap and max skills just by playing F2P, the only thing you can't do is level up the P2P skills and access some of the world map and it's fairly casual (again no keybindings to worry about) it's simply clicking. Also your not hounded by adverts saying 'P2P GET THIS AREA YOU DON'T' or anything they are very good like that. You can also just sub for one month etc i think it's pretty cheap like £3 (in UK) and obiviously there are no Retail Box charges/ Pay to win shops or anything to worry about.

10's a *little* young for that, and they recommend a parent supervise anyone younger than 13 that plays.
I'd recommend leaving the Chat Filter on for her, so the chats censor swearing.
As I recall, it's more like £5 per month now, but still cheap for what you can do.
F2P has a dozen-15 quests you can do, and are fairly easy.
P2P has well over 300 quests, of varying difficulty (and requirements of certain levels in certain skills, previous quests done, etc - it tells you that in the log, though).

I used to play that a LOT, in previous years, but aside from 6 months at the start of this year, I've not played for nearly 3 years, now.

Graphically, not too taxing. Browser based, so no downloads. LOTS to do in both F2P and P2P, but the P2P is definitely massive.

Edit : P2P quest numbers

Ah, there was also the issue they lacked a search tool. Which meant trying to build anything took you ages looking for the proper pieces.

(I had suggested an ability to search for width/height/length, because all of their names for each piece are wholely irrelevant)
I don't understand what you mean by "Maple Story horror stories"; I played it a bit this year after I got online with my new computer, and it was still the same as when I was playing in 2007; you only spend money if you want to, and you don't miss out on any content if you don't.

Hmm, I just got a slight interest in playing again. I see the website says "free to play", whatever that means for this game.
Knowing your kids age would help, I didnt notice it while I scanned through.

Ryzom is a good MMO, free to download and you can play til lv 125 (I think) for free, after that its 7.95€ per month.

It has a mature helpful community, with many actual families playing it together.

Dunno what the pop is like now, but I believe its currently having a resurgance.

EDIT : The dialogue box has moderators in it, so there isn't any cussing or verbal abuse allowed, no trash talking etc. either, so its pretty kid friendly. The age rating iirc is 12.

10, she's still pretty sensitive still but then I'll hear "You fucking piece of shit computer!" randomly... don't know where she learned that one:)

Man, tons of good suggestions here, I guess maybe I need to download and start playing some of these, show her a shortlist of the ones I think are worthwhile and let her pick.

Part of this whole exercise is to find one that doesn't bore me to tears or annoy the hell out of me with the cash shop since she'll want me to play alongside her quite a bit (sounds like the former won't be a problem, since most of these seem like decent games).
