In all honesty the only bonus for a pre order should be a % discount. Nothing else is really worth it....

rastergraphic: As for the bonuses themselves, I'm not against them as long as it's not actual in game content. Soundtrack CDs are cool, so are various physical goods, but I don't like it when the preorder bonus is like ... more guns for an online FPS or something. That's stupid IMO. Goes for either kickstarter or preorders.
Thank you! A sane response to the nonsense that is "preorders are helpign fund the game'" which started popping up ...

The thing about any preorder bonus is that it's not much of a jump from external to in game content ...

As for soundtracks ... I'm more likely to want to listen to a soundtrack after I finish a game if it was enjoyable in game and if I enjoyed the game ... Tying the soundtrack to the preorder means that if one was to really get sucked in by the musical score and want to enjoy that when commuting etc that one would not be able to do so unless the purchaser happened to pre-order...

rastergraphic: Basically, what I'm getting at is that, no, a preorder does not help fund the development of the game, unless we're
talking about an indie game with like 2 people behind it that is. For most retail games you're not contributing at all to the game's development, you're just contributing to the sales numbers and the publisher's pockets.
I agree for AAA retail games, I don't really see the point of preordering them. My comment was really directed at indie titles, who are often working on the game until the last minute so they need an early injection of cash. Maybe a few more than two people though. :-)

I think if people start jumping on the bandwagon saying all preorders are bad, they will hurt the indie devs who need the revenue from preorders to release a polished game.
