Drat: Someone's done a take on this with DooM, addressing a few things missed by the Quake video. The level can even be downloaded and played with some source ports (check the description).
Holy shit! This is pure awesome.

I fell off my chair. Not as over-the-top (or as funny) as the Quake one though.

Once upon a time multiplayer q1 was the best thing ever you could experience from a fps game... That quake done quick vid reminded me of old days :d
the DLC thing is so true.
.If I pay 60 bucks for a game, the whole game had better be there,

DodoGeo: Found a compilation on "teh interwebz" that composes of Quake + Scourge of Armagon + Dissolution of Eternity + Darkplaces source port (with 3gb textures upgrade) + the original NIN soundtrack.

Looks great, sounds great and plays even better. Looking forward to the expansion packs, I never did manage to get them back in the day.
Be sure to check out the unofficial "Malice for Quake" expansion pack. It's amazing, almost on the level of Hexen2. I've had trouble running it on Darkplaces in the past though so you made need to use an engine more that's more true to Dos/Win/GL Quake (Darkplaces is more about features than accuracy).

F4LL0UT: Thank God People Can Fly created Painkiller (which I'm currently playing - once again...). Else hardcore first person shooting whould've died with Quake 2. :P
Didn't they just make Bulletstorm? :/

I fear for the worst. :(

I'll check it out, loved the whole Raven software series.
Maybe you should try again, the first version gave me all kinds of problems, but the last one works flawlessly.

Concerning Bulletstorm, it was fun and over the top, but a very scripted corridor shooter. You couldn't even jump and it didn't even have a deathmatch mode.
So that's one chance for a revival down the drain.

Yes, they did. I haven't played Bulletstorm yet but apparently it's a very modern shooter and highly scripted (as DodoGeo already stated). Painkiller is special for me as I consider it the best "Quakish" game ever made. It's fast, it's brutal and above all: a simple yet perfectly balanced shooter without any typical attempts to improve the game play on a meta level (such as scripted sequences). All they did was adding the Black Tarot which in my eyes is ingenious as you get these bonuses by using the core mechanics in a special way and are rewarded with bonuses that perfectly work within the boundaries of the core mechanics without being trivial. In terms of game design I consider Painkiller one of the best shooters ever made.
